Anyone have any recomendations for an aftermarket auto transmission cooler that will fit the stock footprint of my 2002 dually? Thanks for any info you may have.

Even with the deep pan you need more cooling? With only the Edge comp, that DTT looks like it would be pretty stout and not give you any cooling issues.

Well, I live in Phoenix AZ area and it is pretty hot here, 111 today, 117 last Monday. Unloaded, at 65 mph cruise, in the summer I run 160-170 F. I would like to lower if possible. In the winter, I run 130-140 F.

Larger trans coolers are available. I T-boned a guy in 2005, and got a larger cooler as a replacement for my stock cooler from ATS. It later turned out my stock cooler was just fine--it only looked pushed in, but it wasn't leaking. I returned the oversized cooler and just kept my old one--it still cools just fine with no leaks.

Your temps are nothing to worry about.
Fluid flows though the coolant to ATF heat exchanger to bring the fluid to normal operating temperature. It would be difficult as well as counterproductive to lower you tranny fluid temperature below the coolant temperature.

Thanks for posting that chart Bill. I've never seen over 175 degrees on my trans temp gauge... maybe that's why my trans is still running strong with 168,000 miles on it.

anybody know where the trans. temp. sensor is in the 47RE?

I was just curious where it's getting the temperature reading from.

I've seen temperatures as high as 195F when driving around town in the summer. It gets up around 100F most days in summer in Alabama. Is this normal temperature for the transmission fluid in the summer?

160 degrees during the summer is about as cool as its going to get. I added another cooler with a fan (B&M) for stop and go traffic towing. That was worth the time and money to install.

Guess you reading it with a scan gauge? If so, yes 195 is normal on a stock trans.

well I just order a tranny cooler from etrailer $65..
I tow almost all the time. while its not considered heavy towing..its only aroun 4-5K but it every day..around town..
also i've removed the heat exchanger from the system. it was leaking.
my thinking is if I can reduce the tranny temps, at this point unknown, I'll be better off.

just recently I saw coolant temp pushing the 220 mark..almost to the last white line passed 190F...and the outside temps were in the mid 90's..so my guess would add tranny cooling..its cheap and might help..

Yes, thanks for the chart. I feel better now, I think I will just keep an eye on my temps for now.

A lot can depend on where you are reading the temp from too. I see over 200* quite often but I'm reading it from the hottest point (hot line right before it enters the cooler up front). The chart posted is based on reading the temp from the pan where it would read quite a bit cooler than where I read from. I have a Goerend with over 40k on it and it runs just like the day I bought it.

The article I borrowed the chart from said the temps were from the hottest part of the tranny but didn't say where.
The pan would be the coolest.
