If you use single stage (acrylic enamel) it's anywhere from $50+ per gallon, 2 stage paint (base, clear) is usualy $150 + for paint not including clear coat which ranges from $40 a gallon to over $300 a gallon, plus you figure paint work averaged $100 per job hr and usually depending on vehicle/repair/removal and install of pieces, again I ain't calculating if the vehicle has repair work done it would need primered and blocked. Generally the shop will give a bodyman an average of 8 hrs preptime/repair then they give the painter 4-6 hrs for paint so that estimate of $2000 is pretty fair.

It's pretty easy to do. The paint and little bit of body work for my crew cab was about $4K with me doing 99% of the prep work and a friend doing the paint and most of the body work.

Even Maaco is expensive.

In 1968 you could get an Earl Scheib paint job "Ant Car, Any Color for only $29.95"

http://www.answers.com/topic/earl-scheib-inc

Of course I had to take him to court because one of his employees decided to borrow my car and take his girlfriend to the beach that day, unknowing to him he passed right past where I was working.

You can do it yourself AND do a good job. If you are kind of a DIY person and have a little bit if patience....you can do it. I have, and I will be painting my 91' in a few months. Most of it is the prep work, body work, sanding, stripping off the bumpers, etc off the vehicle.
You should be able to get the paint and material for a few hundred bucks. You will need a decent orbital sander. If you can lay your hands on a compressor and gun....your there. BUT make no mistake....it is a project. You will undoutedly spend several days preaparing to paint....painting...and reassembling your machine. However, after you are done, you save a ton of $$$ and have a nice machine.

You must be using some pretty cheap material's if it's only costing you a few hundred bucks. I didn't get top of the lines by any means and I've got a couple grand into mine.

Not true, I had my old truck painted for around $500, thats all materials and I had a friend paint it. I spent $100 on black single stage paint, 3 rolls of sandpaper(80/150/320)<those are roughly $35-$40 a rolls, then paper to tape of windows, etc, tape, paint sticks, strainers for paint, gallon of primer, mix cups, and your done. I spent under $500 and sure I didn't use dupont paint but the paint I used was the same we used on car at my work and it turned out nice.

We paint alot of stuff with Nason paint. We always used to use Centari single stage with a performance pack. They discontinued Centari due to fed regulations. I agree the paint is not the best but for a truck thats only worth 2,000 bucks why spend 4 K in a paint job that will only increase the worth 1K. A 4 thousand dollar paint job has its place, but it sure isn't at my house.

I am NOT trying to be offensive 95R but I cannot imagine what you spent 2k worth of materials on? I have been checking a few auto paint sites on the web. Doing a cursory check I can't find any paint selling for more than $100 p/gallon. Most in the 50-75 range. Sooo....yea I'm confident you can do a nice job on a truck for <500

It hurt like heck to dish out the money to paint my crew cab conversion, but only option I had was to attempt it myself and figured I would guinea pig another project and bite the bullet.

The money spent on paint could have bought some decent horsepower!!!
