My new to me but old 95' has never had a trailer brake controler. Is there a pre wired fuse port under the hood like in newer trucks to tap into or Do I need to run one from the batt? 12G wire is ok with 2 axles right?

 

if the truck has a plug on the rear it was ordered with a package, the plug for it is by the clutch. if the 4 prong plug is there but no trailer plug you will need to get the pigtail that plugs into a spot near the spare tire. get a maxbrake controller

 

Somewhere back there they started to put the connection on the steering column by the brake/clutch pedals as mentioned. Its rectangular with all the tabs in a line, and IIRC mine is light blue in color.

12 ga. wire will work for the brake controller.

 

This is the only port under the dash, I really have no idea what it is

 

That connector there is an aftermarket immobilizer to help prevent theft.
If your truck has a brake controller connector, it will be buried up under the dash. Look underneath by the clutch pedal arm, you will find a large bulkhead connector attached to a metal bracket. The connector you are looking for will be tucked in behind that metal bracket where the bulkhead connector is. It isn't much fun to find.

 

Its pooring rain tonight, I did it the lazy way and just clicked a pict with the camera- I see something above the hood latch- the truck is a full SLT with power everything so I would assume it should have this connector. Buying used trucks sucks! Just noticed there is a piece of wood glued to the brake pedal where it hits the brake switch

 

Focus on the area in the bottom left of your pictures. That big white connector with the bolt in the center of it. The brake controller connector is usually attached in behind that one or up above it.

 

It's usually the light blue connector.

 

You may want to check out the end connector on an after market brake controller to help see what you are after.

 

I dont think my 1995 has it, it has the 30A relay under the hood but I sure dont see any 30A wires or plugs. I also read that its a bad idea to tap trailer power from the rear tail lights as it puts to much draw on the headlight switch??

 

we had a 95 that had the trailer connection tied up next to the parking brake assembly don't know if it was factory or some one moved it.

 

To add anything to the lighting system is a bad idea, the wiring and headlight switch are maxed out from the factory. If yours doesn't have the tow package I would (1) add relays to the headlights
(2)Run power from the batt. back.

I plan to do the sport headlights with relays, that should free up the headlight switch.

 

Look what I found, Do you think the previous owner cut the plug off when he took the brake controller out of the truck or is thie the pre wireing??

 

Is this the power from the Relay under the hood or is is this the power headed to the back of the truck?
