Troubleshoot trailer brake connection
Troubleshoot trailer brake connection
My gooseneck horse trailer plugs into a 6 pin connector in the bed. The Prodigy brake controller says its not connected to a trailer.
When I plug my flatbed into the 7 pin at the bumper, controller works normal.
Since the Prodigy senses the connection, can I use a multimeter to check the connector? How? If all the lights work on the trailer, could it still be a grounding issue?
thanks

Have the brakes on that trailer ever worked with that truck? On 6 pin connectors there are two acceptable ways to wire them, some use the center pin for 12v power, and some use it for brake. That would be the first thing I would check. Next, I would hook a battery up to the brake and ground pins on the trailer's harness (without the truck attached) and see if this operates the brakes. You may have to jack a wheel or two off the ground to check.
X2 on the multiple choices for the 6 prong plug..

thanks for the help,
Yes this trailer has worked for years. I used to hang the cord over the tailgate, and use a 6 to 7 pin adapter. The adapter pins kept pushing through and losing contact, so I tapped the wires behind the 7 pin, and ran them up into the bed with a 6 pin connector. Will check the back of the receptacle for disconnect, and the wire tap conections first.
That tester looks cool.
