Trailer brakes
 

I recently put in a trailer brake controller and i got an adapter. i spliced the wires and put the colors together like it said to but now my trailer brakes lock up as soon as i hook up to a trailer????

For some reason, you have constant power to the brakes. I am not sure what you mean by an "adapter" ? I have three trailers w/brakes - all three use a blue wire for the electric brakes. Some truck plugs are wired a bit differently - so you may need to trace the wires.

On many controllers you have to match wires by function, and what color does what will be different between the controller and truck...

What brand and model of controller do you have?

If you're referring to the 7pin to 6pin adapter, you have the wrong one. There are two types that are available. One puts the brakes on the center pin of the 6 pin, the other puts the +12V on the center pin. You need the one that puts the +12V in the center. Right now it sounds like your trailer brakes are wired directly to +12V, thus they stay locked up full time.

You can either switch adapters, or just take that one apart and switch the wires inside.

Looking at what AggieJustin posted reminded me that there is two different plug setups found on the round pin utility trailer plugs.

He's probably right.

by addapter i mean from the under dash wires that go to the brake controller. an adapter plugs into those and then you splice your wires from the box to ones off the adapter. Thanks for the help-

In that case, I'd bet they were supposed to be spliced according to function, and something got reversed.

Other possibility is you might have a defective controller.

Did you get it sorted out?

For the plug under the dash, make sure you connect the wires together by function. The color codes don't always match. When a buddy of mine did his, he matched colors and ended up letting some of the magic smoke out of his controller. Which if that didn't happen to you, you might be hooked up right but just have a plug that doesn't match the trailer.

Are you using a 6 pin or 7 pin plug to the trailer?

thanks i got it the colors didnt matter it was the function just like yall said. i matched by function and it works like a dream. thanks guys
