Trailer Brake/wiring ??'s

Been havin' recent trailer brake issues with my stock '96. When pullin' my 16 ft flatbed, I have lights but no brakes. Checked trailer wiring, looks OK. Switch tow rigs and brakes on the trailer work fine. Fairly new brake controller (voyager) all connections look OK. One day brakes work, next day they don't. Any thoughts? Thanks

Check your brake wire in the trailer connector. I had the same problem and the brake wire inside the connector was loose.

Check all your grounding points as well.

Trailer checks out fine (towed with two other rigs) and brakes/lights work, connections solid, so it "must" be issue with my rig. Double checked connections with controller under dash = OK. Is it a straight shot from from factory harness in cab to factory plug at rear bumper? Where is the ground(s) on the truck side? Am I missin' anything??

How is your trailer grounded to the truck? Through the ball connection?

The White wire on your connector is the ground. If you rely on your hitch ball only you will have problems.

Disconnect trailer from hitch and leave electrical connector hooked up. Everything should work as supposed.

Yes through the ball and I understand that's not the best way: however, why would the ball ground work for years an' then suddenly stop? The "test" rigs I used were also ball ground and trailer brakes worked. Plugged in trailer without hitchin' her up and an' everything (lights/signals) works, except brakes. Light on controller comes on showing I have a connection. I'm gunna take apart the plug on the truck side an' see if that's my problem.

Electrical is an amazing thing, you'd be amazed at what can and can't do at any given time! And most of the time the problem is just the ground! It's a crazy thing!
