first tow with 5th wheel

2003 SO quad short bed 48RE 2WD
27ft 25RLSS wildwood 5th wheel about 7250lbs

I just got back from a trip in Western North Carolina. Truck was great. It pulled the long grades fine. It would drop as low as 50mph if I did not step into it and it would drop into third and out of overdrive if I had thr cruise set. If I accelerated on the down grades and the gave it some light pedal going up the hill I could about maintain my 60 to 65 mph while staying in OD.
Coming back I was concerned about the long grades down the black mountain area. It is about 7 to 8 miles of 6 to 8% grade. I had wanted the exhaust brake but that did not work out. Any way I had to brake about 4 times. I switched out of OD when I headed down. It was wonderful, I felt sure I was going ot have to stay on the brake. It actually seemed slower with the 5th wheel than if I had been coming down empty.
Got it the first week of July, have over 11,000 miles. In eastern North Carolina running 55 to 60 I can get 28 mpg plus, I just can't seem to run that speed. Around 70 mph I get about 23. I have a Peragon bed cover and love it.

Re:first tow with 5th wheel

;D Over 10K miles this summer with a 10K# 5er I also was in the 12-13MPG range, lowest when running 68MPH on cruise on the interstate. Mileage would get to 15 towing on the back roads.

No issues all summer, no oil or water used at all. ;D

Re:first tow with 5th wheel

I hear ya! I just pulled my fiver from Burlington WA. to Reno. 852 miles, 11 mpg. I was at 23,000 gross, I couldn't believe how it pulled, one word, awesome! Granted it is not that tough of pull but it is impressive to pass everything going up hill.
