some do have electric brakes

The dual axle shorelander trailer under my 1980 24' sea ray has electric brakes on it!

Yeah, but I doubt it had a 4 pin connecter! Most boat trailers have surge brakes. When the towvehicle brakes, the trailer neck bends/separates/splits and tells the brakes to activate. your controller won't do anything.

That's why you see pulling huge boats w/ a minivan or worse a a shortbed d-max or a PS.

Correct can't use a 4 pin and have electric brakes or you would have to give up some lights i use an rv 7 pin connector. Sometimes surge brakes can be a real pain backing up on ruff ground or up hill unless they have a lockout pin.

And as far as the nut cases in the mini vans you are 110 percent correct Michigan is really bad with them pulling large boats and campers when i come upon them i am glad i have my cummins because i put the hammer down and put some distance between myself and them real quick!!! Those are usually the ones that can't back up and have no idea how to tow to begin with. And if they drop one trailer tire off of the road edge the whole thing will be upside down real quick !

And now those idiots at ford are advertising towing 10k plus with a half ton YEE HAA i can see the pieces flying already.
