Towing Question

A buddy of mine asked me if I would tow his sail boat for him...so my question is this: Will my Class IV tow package be ok pulling a roughly 10k boat loaded on I'm guessing a 1-2k trailer with a 12k receiver hitch? Braking I'm not worried about, I have a Tekonsha Prodigy and the trailer has brakes, so that is fine. I'm just wondering about the tow package...Thanks in advance.

You have a link to w/d hitches? I am trying to find out more about his boat...if I can find out an exact weight that will either tell me no way, or give me the warm and fuzzies, that would be great. This will be the most I have EVER towed without the load being loaded on a gooseneck or fifth wheel...just a little concerned. The receiver hitch can fall off for all I care, that stuff is replaceable...but his boat and possibly hurting/killing folks on the highway, I can't deal with.

you can get weight distribution hitches at any rv store, some auto parts stores, cabellas, jc whitney, performance corner catalogs, etc.

Update! Just googled his boat...30' Luger Voyager...weighs 7000lbs ready to sail (full of water, fuel, etc) and the trailer is 27 footer and weighs roughly 8-900lbs. I am going to drop a few pounds from his boat as it will be empty, but even still, it will be right at 8k roughly. He said that the guy he had pulling it before told him it FELT like 10-12k...probably because he was in an older 6.5! I am just going to go and get a 10k hitch and pull away. Oh yeah, and one more thing: Our tow packages are 7 prong harnesses right?

yes the trucks come with a 7 pin connector. I wouldnt be to worried about the hitch. I have hauled 11000 lbs + with my 97 2500 with the stock hitch. Pushing the limits yes but it did it without a problem.

youll be fine. weight ratings to me are all propaganda unless you get weighed. the fact that the new f-150 is rated for 10k is an edit joke.

Thanks guys...oh, and the reason that I was asking about the 7 pin harness was because he said that the one on his trailer is only 4??? Never heard of one of those I reckon...hope I won't have to be relying on just the truck's brakes to stop this thing!

Head on over to the autoparts store and buy an $8 adapter. You need those brakes!

4 won't have brakes.
4 = left right stop and clearance lights... and Ground... No brakes.
Brakes will be a 5 flat minimum...

Guys this is a Boat trailer, they do not have electrical brakes. They are surge brakes.

Your truck should have come equipped with a 7 pin to flat 4 adapter, if not, as mentioned you can get one at Autozone or pepboys...

Look under the bumper, the 4 pin plug should be there.
