towing from MD to WY: Best route?

Hey all, I'm pulling a 32ft, two car gooseneck, from MD to Northwest Wyoming later this week. My previous trips with no trailer, I've gone across on 90 and over the Big Horns to get to Cody, WY.

I was thinking of taking the same route this time but am wondering about coming down the west side. The load on the trailer will be a ford focus and VW beetle. I do not have an exhaust brake on my truck. Should I be looking for a different route or should this work ok with just gearing down and going slow? If i go this route, I would probably take 90 to Buffalo and then take 16 over the big horns which I believe is an easier climb and descent, than 14.

Any alternate recommendations? Would I be better off going across on 80 to Chyenne and then up to Cody?

Thanks in advance.
Dan

if i was going to be making the trip i would take I-80 to Cheyenne the turn onto I-25 to Casper then take 20/26 from Casper to Shoshoni then take 20 from shoshoni to thermopolis then take 120 from thermopolis into cody.
or you could stay on I-90 all the way thru Billings Montana to a little town called Laural montana then take highway 212/310 stay on the 310 road to a place called bridger then turn onto highway 72 to the state line then the road turns into highway 120 into cody hope this is what you wanted

Thanks for the help, the route through cheyenne sounds like it may be the best option. I've been up through bridger and billings before but that a bit out of the way coming from the east.

Thanks for the info.

Lookout Below!

Taking the more southern route, 16 I think, should be easier on brakes etc. than going through Shell Canyon on 14. It was beautiful going up and down over the mountains, but I couldn't watch much because I was constantly braking and down shifting!

Enjoy the ride.

I've been through both routes, 14 and 16. I agree 16 would be the easier of the two. However, I think it would still be hard on the brakes, especially without an exhaust brake on the truck.

I think I'll opt for going way south on 80 instead of 90 and come up from the south. That would avoid the brake killer hills completely. I'll just drop down on 80 near Chicago instead of heading north on 90. It's a negligible difference in miles.
