Towing for $$

I have a friend who recently moved from here to alberta , and he wants me to tow a trailer loaded with a bunch of his stuff out there for him , he would pay for trailer rental , fuel , and give me a little $$ for me, I would do it mostly as a favour , but i want to make sure i would agree on a rate that makes sure i cover my costs. I am looking for some numbers to go on as to what it would cost me per mile to haul a tandem U haul trailer out , and come home empty.

the reimbursable IRS rate on a car is 44.5 cents per mile. That's what you can take off your taxes using your car (truck) for business. so that what they think it costs you to run a car. therefore you need to charge more than that or your going in the hole. You can get a hotshot for $1.00 -1.75 per loaded mile, so some where in between. but what do I know I'm just a kid

I am hauling a uhaul with someone elses stuff in it next week.
1. I insisted on them insuring the contents, and rig, so I am not liable for damages.
2. I figured the expected milage, against the MPG and got cash for that amount. I will keep reciepts, and settle up the difference on arrival.
3. I figure 2 hours per hundred miles, which allows for stops, meals, etc. that lets me compute how many days to get home, and I ask for 100 dollars per night, for room and evening meal in advance. I am supplying my own breakfast and lunch. We're going from Baltimore to Oregon.
If you are towing with your own rig, remember that it isn't only fuel: you are depreciating your rig a certain amount as well.
Secondly, if your friend balks at the costs, which are far less than any other method, then they can't afford to move.
Final thought, this favor isn't supposed to COST you anything. You are already donating your time. Compute that at what you value your time at, and that is what they are saving.
Hope this helps.

Hauling cattle, I usually get $2.25 a loaded mile, but than again I own the trailer, and cover my own fuel, parts, oi, ins. etc... Hauling hay I am getting about $3 a roll. But I can't haul very far for that rate. I know it's apples and oranges but it might give you something to think about. Your tuck is a tool, that depeciates with use. You have to figure all the little stuff in.

But if it isa buddy..........(I just hauled a buddy's jeep home from down in Pike county, 3 hrs away, for the cost of fuel and $50 bucks. I didn't make anything but he was a friend)

I should have kept better records but I just did basically the same thing the first of October driving from Chatham, ON to Calgary, AB approx. 3200km or 2000 miles with the my truck loaded up with one guys stuff. You couldn't get another box of Kleenex under the capper and then towing a Jeep loaded up with another guys stuff behind with 3 guys in my truck and our stuff for a weeks stay. I burnt through approx. $500 CDN. worth of fuel on the way out and around $300 CDN. on the way back and we made the trip out in 32 hrs straight with all stops including customs and 30 hours on the return (few less fuel stops) so fuel economy wasn't the priority. Below is a picture of us arrived in Calgary.

If I can provide any other information just let me know and would be happy to share.
