Tow/Haul necessary to be on?

My dad has a 2004 Dodge AT 3500 Laramie, and the dealer told him whenever he is towing his horse trailer it's necessary for the tow/haul to be on. He rather not use it for gas consumption reasons and it is rev'ing VERY high... the truck handles the load fine without having it on.

Should he have it on or is it ok not to?

The dealer said me I have to use it, but the deisel mech. said that as long as the truck is'nt straining or chugging it is not needed. The only time I turn on tow/haul is a steep hill or bridge.Good question!! I am interested in other opinions too! Redneck

In the '04 Cummins powered Ram tow/haul is still O/D off. No need to use it with the Cummins unless you're climbing a grade and need to lock out O/D to apply all that torque at a faster rate (more horsepower).
