I am asuming you have kids with ya. Make sure to stop buy the dinosaur museum. Canon City is one of the richest dinosaur fosil areas in the country. Lots of them in Red Canyon Park I just have never gone looking for them while out there.

Thanks! Will do. I'll go check out the "must see" roads. And, yes my son loves anything to do with dinosaurs. We will prob check out the "frontier town" thingy too. Im mainly looking forward to the ATVing and whitewater rafting. I want some challenge to it.....but we will have to settle as my son is only 12 and take a "slower" set of rapids. They won't let him ride the Royal Gorge until he is 16 I think.

Speaking of transporting the ATVs....I may wind up renting the cheapest, smallest trailer Uhaul has once I get there to haul one of them on. I have a friend that will loan me hers, but im afraid it's just a little to big (width wise) to fit in the Toyhauler.

For sale at Harbor Freight, Walmart, Lowes, and such places are D.O.T, legal trailers that the area for the flat is 4' X 6', just right for a single 4-wheeler-ATV or riding-mower.

I know because my father bought one and I put the thing together in about ten minutes. (it all comes in a box)

For about the cost of a one-time rental, one of these can be bought, hauled partially dis-assembled if necessary, put together when needed, then dis-mantled again.

They come "flat-less", and instead of adding a big bulky heavy flat, for your purposes, I would only add two simple troughs, spaced to entrap the tires.

For use closer around home, a seperate removable flat could be devised.

Here is the 8"-tired version (note the total weight):

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=42708

A little more money gets the 12"-tired version :

As best I can tell, the basic frame of both trailers is exactly the same.

Myself, I would opt for the 8" version and buy a seperate set of 12" tires/wheels, then raise the fenders to clear the 12" tires; thus I would have the option of the taller tires on longer trips, and the smallness of the 8-inchers when I needed it to take up less room.

I can not see your equipment to say for certain, but I would also look into the possibility of hoisting a small trailer up on top.

Or, maybe load an ATV on the small trailer INSIDE the toy-hauler.

BearKiller....thanks for the info and links. That is an idea. What's another 2-300 dollars..

Those trailers would be perfect for this trip.......I am just not sure when I would ever use them again. I already have a homemade (boat trailer turned utility) trailer that is long enough for both ATVs back to back. But it is to long to go inside my TH.

Here is a couple of pics of my Truck and TH. Since these pics were taken I have added 16'' BFG Commercial LT tires to the TH, and got rid of the "d" rated chinese junk tires.

Well we made the trip to Colorado and it was a blast!!

Stayed near the Royal Gorge and checked out other areas nearby too.

In no particular order....

We went Whitewater Rafting, Horseback Riding, ATVing with our rides at "Texas Creek", and driving on the Marshall Pass Rd (over the continental divide) and the "Shelf" Rd. Drove Pike's Peak and went to Garden of the Gods. Gambled a little at Cripple Creek and doubled my money from $20 to $40....which was spent on a steak/shrimp dinner at the casino. Rode the little steam train from CC to Victor. Saw the Royal Gorge obviously......beautiful!

After driving back and sleeping overnight at Childress, TX I was still able to attend a local dyno meet, unhook the travel trailer, and win "street class"....Plaque and $100....before getting back to the house. Wow what a trip!

Thanks everybody for your assistance and guidance regarding this trip. It was very much a good time....no problems at all.....(other than Pike's Peak was closed at 11,000ft due to a snow storm!)

There are a few pics on the TX DTR #8 June thread for anybody that wants to see.....

Texas,

Did you camp at Texas Creek? I grew up south of Ft Worth but have lived here in Colorado for 14 yrs now. We have camped at TC for a few years but they have lowered the weight rating of the bridge that crosses the Arkansas from like 10 tons down to 3.5 tons. Obviously whatever you did you made it. I just came across this thread today and was going to let you know but you had already been there done that. TC is a very fun place to spend a weekend. Glad you had a good time. Nice pics.

The only wildlife we saw while on the "Shelf Road" were Mule Deer. I did see a Black Bear about 25 yards from me while ATVing at Texas Creek. He took off running down the trail in front of me and into the woods before my mind could process........'Ohhh.....that's a black bear'.. My guess is he weighed around 200-250lbs.

I wish I could have driven the Phantom Canyon Rd too....but just ran out of time. Maybe next time.

No we didn't camp at Texas Creek. I just stayed at the KOA near Royal Gorge. I honestly didn't know what to expect so I just went ahead and made reservations. Next time I go I will probably just "boondock" along Highway 50 and the Arkansas River on some public land. I know now that we can stay for up to two weeks for free.

Texas Creek was a blast! There are so many other areas I want to go ride up that way....including "Four Mile" near Buena Vista and Penrose Commons and several others.

If they lowered the weight rating on that bridge at TC...I guess I can't take my Toyhauler in there. Actually......my truck would be overweight by itself.

Im gonna definately make it back up there sometime! I'd like to just move there. The temps back home now are in the upper 90s/low 100s. The highest temp I saw in CO was 75 degrees.
