Tank trailer, springs or torsion?

I haul 350 gallons of Liquid Degreaser (Very low caustic % Industrial Soap) about once a week, and 220 gallons much more often but not nearly as far.

I'm going to build myself a new trailer with dual axles and a 500 gallon tank. My current rig is a single 3500# spring axle homemade VERY UGLY trailer.

I have to pull the 350 gallons (or the 500) down I-59 from Livingston, TX to Houston. This is some of the worst road I have encountered anywhere I have travelled and I used to bust tires, springs, wheels etc. pretty regular. I slowly fixed things like the rear shackle bracket location until I haven't busted anything in perhaps 8 trips now.

Anyway the question I have is: Spring axles given the terrible road? Or torsion axles for a better ride?

Springs...if its not enuff you can add leafs to beef them up...or change the whole spring pack...you cant do that with torsion

Re:Tank trailer, springs or torsion?

I have never owned a tank trailer, but either have had or still have boat, car hauler and box trailers. Several of these have run at or near GVWR. I have had both spring and torsion axles. Short version is that I will never, never, never own another trailer with leaf springs. I acknowledge that on multi axle installs they do a better job of weight distribution, and they are much easier to work on, but I have never needed to work on a torsion axle. No maintenance other than brakes and bearings, much quieter (especially on boat trailers) and much better ride settle it for me.

YMMV - and no, I don't sell them.

Ditto what Nevada said. Had them on GN flatbed. Really nice if you have to travel over rough dirt roads. I'd have them on anything given the choice.

Re:Tank trailer, springs or torsion?

I've got one trailer of each type...

The torsion trailer runs at close to max GVW, and I have to be very particular about it riding exactly level, because the tandem torsion suspension does not equalize. If I don't adjust the hitch perfectly level, it throws more weight to one axle, overloading it, and then I have a blowout- usually on the interstate.

The torsion tandem doesn't do real well in rough off road terrain, either--usually seeing one tire squished almost flat when it carries all of the weight on a big bump.
JMHO

Re:Tank trailer, springs or torsion?

Before I got this F*rd, I drove a 150 Supercab SWB with cross bed, side boxes and liftgate that was weighted up pretty good.

I carry two 55 gallon drums when I pull the trailer full. I have several drawbars to set up height with.

That 150 would set up an occilation(sp? - don't have a dict. here) something awful on that bridge! It didn't matter how I loaded it.

I have learned exactly where two put the drums on this 350 to have a suprisingly good ride. It seems that wheelbase helps!

Gotta end here, would love to talk with you MWomack...

Any relation to Lloyd?

My Dad knew Lloyd pretty good. He was with Phillips Crane for many years. I know of a son of his that worked there too.

Last name for the place was Baldwins (But I think they've sold or went bankrupt one).

I want to say that he lived down Angleton way.

He's been gone for several years, and that's sad.

He was a really nice guy!

Oh, and now I know which Mobil station you meant.

I'm going to take 220 gallons out I-10 east Tuesday I think. If I can get my Sony Floppy drive camera back from my buddy I'll get a picture of my UGLY trailer!

Re:Tank trailer, springs or torsion?

Torsion is the only way to fly on rough uneven roads because a wheel over a rut does not drop down into the valley like a leaf spring setup.

I can't believe how flat my horse trailer goes over very rough and rutted roads and fields.

Thanks to all who have responded!

The only time my trailer axles would have widely divergent loads is backing up my driveway or pulling out loaded. I plan to axle up for 7000 pounds on the new trailer.
