switching from surge brakes to electric

Anyone have any idea on what is involved here ??

Never been a fan of surge brakes, but the boat/trailer I am buying comes with only surge brakes, and due to weight, it is required to have them.

Did this to my boat trailer a couple years ago. Pretty easy actually.

Trailer parts house should have loaded backing plates for electric brakes. Comes complete with brake shoes. Remove your old backing plates and existing hydraulic lines. Replace with new backing plates and run wires. I welded up my coupler so it didn't slide anymore. A friend of mine replaced his coupler. Either way works.

Surge brakes would be a better choice for a boat trailer. Electricity & water do not mix real well. I know it has been done but do not have any experience with electric brakes on a boat trailer. My boat & trailer weigh about #6500 lbs and surge brakes work great. They are drum and not disk brakes but works great for me. May look into changing the brake actuator tongue to a better one if that is an issue.

I don't like the fact that if the trailer starts to sway, you can't actuate the trailer brakes alone to stop it.

You control your electric/hydraulic actuator with your dash mounted controller...
