Stock truck towing capacity?
Stock truck towing capacity?
Hey guys, I was wondering how much weight can my truck pull? It's all stock and I am installing electric brakes. I am asking because I have to drive from NY to OH, with about a 4500# trailer and a 2,000# skid steer and was wondering if my truck would be able to do. I though my truck could haul it and much more but I wasnt sure if it would stop!!! Thanks
Re:Stock truck towing capacity?
If the trailer has brakes you will be fine. I have a gooseneck that weighs 5200 + 2000 worth of sleds. I drag that thing all over. Even before I got the comp.
Re:Stock truck towing capacity?
Check your GCWR on your door (or in your glove box). If you're within that then your truck is rated to haul it. DO make sure you have trailer brakes though.
These trucks will pull just about anything you can SAFELY pull without any mods whatsoever. All of the guys BOMBing their trucks are doing it because they want it to pull BETTER...but it will do it just fine straight from the factory. That's what it's made for.

Hey thanks, I checked the GVWR and it said 8800 is that what I am looking for?

No...look for the GCWR....Gross Combined Weight Rating. This is the total weight of the combined rig (truck and trailer) with all equipment. You don't want to exceed the GVWR either though....

Re:Stock truck towing capacity?
I cant find the GCWR anywhere. what does the GVWR mean? I just dont know if I could haul this thing, I think I can but is it too much?
Wait I was looking through my book and I found it. For my truck the GCWR is 18,000 lbs and the GVWR is like I said 8,800 lbs. and the Maximum trailer weight rating is 11,900 lbs. What is the difference between all of these?

Is that including the weight of your truck? MAN, u didn't even have a exhaust brake? And you also have a stick so thats a little better right and yours is a 1 ton too.

Re:Stock truck towing capacity?
That is gross weight of everything. Oh yeah, I had the exhaust brake then too. That was one of the first things I installed right after I drove it off the lot with six miles on it.
If you go to the Member Photos section and look on page two under dieseldude4x4's pics and hobbies, you can see some of the loads I pull.

GCWR is the Gross Combined Weight Rating....which includes EVERYTHING in the whole setup. Trailer, truck, gear, fuel, etc.
GVWR is the maximum weight that the truck ITSELF should weigh. For example if your truck weighs 7,000 pounds and your GVWR is 8,800 pounds, then you can safely haul 1,800 pounds ON YOUR TRUCK if loaded properly. This includes trailer tongue weight, fuel, gear, etc......whatever weight is actually on the truck itself.
Maximum trailer weight is exactly that....per the book. If your truck is loaded at 8,800 pounds and your trailer is 11,900 pounds, that puts you at 20,700 pounds...which would be OVER the GCWR and would get you a ticket if a police officer were so inclined.
Basically, you can haul your 6,500 pound trailer with no problem.
