Shift question
Shift question
Question fellas. When towing a trailer, I've decided the time to shift out of OD is at 60mph/1500rpm. When it goes below that, what is the best way to shift out of OD? Should I hit the button and turn the OD off, or put my foot in the right skinny pedal and let it shift down on it's own when it wants to? I'm used to towing with a standard and I'm still trying to get used to towing with the auto. The trailer is only about 6k pounds. Let me know what you all think. By the way, the truck is stock.
towing heavy
I have a 2003 and tow a 13,500lb 5er. When I get into a hill and the RPM starts dropping I hit the towhaul switch at about 1500RPM. On the steep long hills if the RPM keeps dropping I pull it into second at about 15ooRPM again. That takes me to about 2000 or 2200 and that will hold any hill I have found. I towed over a 7 mile hill yesterday and some was at 9%. Friday I was dreaming and on the long hill the trans shifted by itself. I heard the fan come on and the trans temp got to 175*. The engine temp climbed to about 230 and the trans did the trick where it sensed the hot condition and shifted to a taller gear. It was then I figured out that I was in first gear turning about 2500RPM. That is why it's better to manually shift and help the truck out.
