is a shift kit necessary for towing?

I have a 2002 Dodge 2wd diesel w/automatic trans and want to tow a 14 foot enclosed trailer with a sandrail inside. I have heard that the automatics need a Transgo shift kit or it will hurt the tranny.
Is there a trailer weight limit for the stock trans?
I feel this trailer will not be too big a deal for the truck but don't want to hurt anything either.
Comments? thanx
