Question Reese Titan, Putnam XDR or.......

Hi All,
I currently have a Reese Titan on my truck. It's a nice hitch, but hangs too low for my tastes. So, I'm considering replacing it with a Putnam. Either one will handle the weight I'm towing, though obviously, the Titan handles a little more and the Putnam would be close to max with its 1500# TW. Also, I have already invested the money in the WD equipment and Sway, so am not anxious to loose my rear end selling it all. Another consideration I had was to modify the Titan and "make" it fit. I know that would void the warranty on the hitch, but if the job was done correctly, than I wouldn't worry about it.

So...sell it or modify it?

TIA

Can't comment on the Titan, but I went with the Putman class V - bolts onto the frame, so no welding or other modifications. I did have to torch and remove the standard hitch receiver tube - courtesey of a muffler shop - then took an angle grinder to it and some touch up paint/rust preventer to clean things up. I put the Putnam on myself - easy and looks like OEM - but at a much higher capacity - 15,000 lb.

I've got a Putnam, too and I have no troubles with it. Really easy to install, and a great price.

Well, because of the money already invested in the WD setup, we decided to modify the Titan to meet my needs. It's at the welding shop as we speak getting relocated to the stock location with brackets added to support the rear bumper. I'll make pics available upon completion.
The before pic is in my member photos...

I added a pic of the newly updated Titan in my member pics.
It should be available by morning. There's also a pic here.

A final heads up for potential Titan buyers. My welder wasn't very happy with the quality of the Titan. He spoke about inadequate mounting of the receiver, the lack of deep penetrating welds and the use of thin-wall tubing. All of these he chose to rectify in addition to relocating the receiver higher.
I'm a happy camper now!

Not that it matters now, but-

Why would you have to get rid of the WD and Sway??
All this stuff connects to the Reese Head, which should be able to plug into ANY 2 in. receiver.

I guess your Reese head is the adjustable type, so that you can still use it with your new-height receiver?

Yeah, the Titan is a 2.5 in. receiver on the truck.
Their extension is the regular 2 in. on the trailer end, and will fit ANY head type.

The Titan has a 2.5" receiver. The shank and head are also 2.5". So, none of the WD parts could be used with a 2" receiver, except maybe the 1700# trunnion bars, but that would be too much for any of the 2" WD systems.

Anyhow, took the rig to Pismo this weekend. Every worked well.

If removing the OEM hitch receiver tube to mount a Putnam hitch, does one still end up with support for the bumper ?

1sttruck,
That was one of the issues I had. Besides the Titan hanging too low, the original installer took off the factory receiver which supported the bumper. When I had the Titan modified, I had brackets added to support the bumper, so it's taken care of too. The Titan was designed to be used in conjunction with the factory receiver.
