HODiesel,

a 24k trailer is a tandem dual. 8 tires. i think your math accounted for 4 tires.
so while he is overloaded most likely, he is not too far over. 34k 8 tires = 4250 per tire.
not to mention that about 20% or so of the 34k is actually loaded to the truck via pin weight, and he said he has 14ply( i think) on the truck. so he is pretty close on the tire caps, except the rear axle on the truck is taking a beating.

20% would be about 6800lbs which would put him close if he had a dana 80... GAWR is 6800 because of the load range E tires, but if he was running 14 ply, the axle is good to 8000+..... I am not saying this is necessarily smart to do with a SRW truck, but I can see where it could be done..... I would still like to see a scale slip and some pictures but I think that point has been hammered home like no other...

Dodge rates the D80 with a GAWR of 6800 lbs but Dana spicer has the Dana 80 with BOM# from a dodge d80 with a 10000 lbs rating. Dont remember where i sourced that from but it was on dana spicers page a few years back.

You guys are impatient. I rolled into palmer ak on friday morning. I dont have internet at the house so I waited until today to check my mail and check this site. I just got back from iraq in april and havent been to my civilian job until today. If you thought you ever had alot of email, I garuntee i have you beat. I have 1,976 unread email. Back to the situation at hand. The trailer has twin axles and are rated for 24k together. I had those two on the scale and they weighed in at 30,560lbs. The *** end of the truck weighed in at 7,600 lbs. The front of the truck weighed in at 5,600 lbs. This is a grand total of 43,760lbs. The tires on the rear were G-rated tires and were rated for 3750 a piece. The tires on the trailer were rated for 3500 a piece. I was over rated by 250 pounds or so per tire. I was quite nervous driving this thing so far, but I had no problems. Like I said, I only went 50mph max. The thing I was worried most was the stability of the rear end, but I never even came close to a problem. You all want pics, well, you will have to wait until tomorrow to see them. I will post them, but you all will have to help me as I have never posted pics on here before. I did get stopped at the weigh station in Canada entering BC at Fort ST. JOHN. I drove right past the scale and they stopped me. I told him I wasnt commercial and he said if I was over 8800 kgs, I have to stop. I just played stupid and turned around. I weighed in at 19,000kgs. That number isnt exact but close. I was nervous about the fines at the time. I started talking iraq with him and he told me that he wasnt going to give me a fine, but his computers were down for permits and told me to drive to fort nelson and stop at the weigh station there and get a permit. When I got there 5 hours later, they were closed and were going to be closed for another 4 days. I called the RCMP and they said there was nothing more I could do. So I continued and and made it just fine. The weight was from a 40x60 shop rated at 110mph wind load so the steel is dam thick. It has the sheeting on it, all the steel, doors, insulation, I bought a four wheeler in wisconsin, a two post lift from texas along with a tire machine and balancer. It all added up to this weight. I will get you pics tomorrow.

The only good thing about that area is that I know it inside out. Go snomachining up there and atving all the time. The worst stretch was from haines jct to the border. The scariest hill was around the summit lake area in canada. They call it pink mountain and it was a 9% grade and at the bottom of the hill, they were working on the bridge. I really should have been in second gear with the pac brake but I was in third. I was nervous but I got it slowed down to a stop easier than it looked.

How come my '03 DRW HO was lucky to get 9 MPG towing a travel trailer that weighs less than 9,000 lbs?

Good, if somewhat ill advised job RD. glad to hear you made it home. the south end of sikanni, the north side of steamboat, and the north side of stone mountain would have been killer downgrades.
I did a similar trip in may of 01, when my truck had under 15,000 km on it. not near as heavy though, only 38,860 lbs. It was a test for the pacbrake, and the driver, cruised through from fort st john to whitehorse in one pull.
Being I have done that road too many times, I no longer run it fast, or for the scenery, but because I have to. Did a trip to edmonton in may, Left whitehorse sunday morning at 9 am, and was back home in whitehorse wednesday evening at 7. what a trip.
Anyway, definitely get some pics of the load, and what have you, and careful hauling.
