I recently ordered a Cedar Creek Silverback 36L5S fifth wheel. The trailer is 12600 lbs empty with a max of 15.5K. I live in NY and mostly travel the east coast from Vermont and PA to Florida to camp. It will probably be many years until we venture out west. I'm trying to talk myself into or out of ordering an exhaust brake.

I have airbags on their way and would like an airsource to adjust on the fly. I can get just a compressor and onboard controller or go for the whole deal with the brake controller.

For those of you that have an exhaust brake, or dont, what are your opinions.

Do it, Its great. I tow all the time and I cannot imagine towing without it. It should come standard. It has been flawless for the last 12K miles. Order it up, also the Pacbrake Airbags are better built then everyone elses. If your towing over 8K you need it the pacbrake.

Before you go and buy your on-board air for the air bags you should note the exhaust brake comes with it's own compressor so all you would need is the in-cab controls, this will save a few dollars vs buying the air and in-cab controls, then the exhaust brake later on, and ending up with two compressors..

 

I'd get the exhaust brake. I know I wish I had one for that last trip to KY. Those grades put a real hurting on my brakes, and they were new! My next big upgrade is gowing to be exh. brake and TQ/VB.

 

Both my dad and I have the OEM jakes... They are great and I wouldn't tow without one...

 

Heck I use my Pac even when I'm not towing. The savings on brakes alone pay for the exhaust brake.

 

Yeah, I have heard of guys going 200K on OEM brakes from using the EB.. .mine is used quite often. There is a HUGE difference in pedal pressure when braking with and without it, empty or loaded.

 

Go for it. The EB was one of the best mod's I did on the Dodge for pulling heavy. With a "Stated" dry weight of 12,600lbs you'll be reaching 15K really quick as soon as you load up that new trailer. The next thing you'll need is a chip of some kind for going up those hills.
