pacbrake

I have a 07 dodge 2500 5.9 ctd, I'am going to buy a exhaust brake , except I have a question what is the on board air compressor for? also is it necessary to have an on-off switch with this.

The exhaust brake is activated by compressed air so you need on board air of some kind, The pacbrake compressor I had on my 2001 is very good and also had an air tank. The pacbrake can be set up two ways, one the brake comes on controlled by the ECM/PCM I forget which doing it this way there is a 2-3 second delay, the second is by a switch on the throttle pedal, when the pedal returns to idle the brake comes on instantly so yes you need a switch preferably one that mounts on the gear shift so you can turn it off between gear shifts or slippery conditions.

ok thanks, why is it the ad says that They have the ability to be left on all the time, making it ideal for in-city driving or for steep, downhill grades. then why do you need a switch if you can leave it on at all times.
this is for a Pacbrake C44037 DirectMount PRXB Exhaust Brake.

Yes the PRXB...It is best to leave it on all the time as it keeps everything moving and it won't seize up, you do have to lube it though. The reason you would turn it off is in slippery conditions, you can easily spin the truck out of control, another would be between gear changes if you have the instant on, every time you let your foot off the throttle to change gears the brake would slam on. It does come with an on/off switch that is dash mounted but as I said if you have the manual trans I would install one on the gear lever. I leave the exhaust brake on all the time in my 2011 auto trans except in slippery conditions.
