milemarker winches?

Does anyone have experience with the Mile Marker line of electric winches? I am looking at the 12,000 lb electric winch, but the Ramsey and Warn's are almost double the price.

The main use will be to mount on a trailer to load cars with

Thanks

Don't know anyone w/ that winch, but if all you're gonna do is load cars onto trailers, then that should be plenty. If you plan on using it for other things, like getting your truck unstuck outta some thick mud, or snow, then maybe a Warn 15k will suit you better. A rule of thumb for winch ratings is that you want 1.5 times the weight of what you will be winching. Easier on the winch among other things.

I've also seen people use ATV winches for that exact purpose- loading up cars. Might want to check into that, but I guess it depends on how heavy the car(s) are going to be.

Look in the off-road forum, they have a discussion about those and other winches in the multimount thread.

The MM 12k is a decent winch. The biggest differance is the gear ratio, the Ramsey and Warn are geared to pull faster and the MM is geared to pull slower. The MM SE1200 looks very similar to the Ramsey??? Wonder if they are made at the same plant?? The old E1200 looks very similar to Warn. I agree they are a little better winches but a lot of the cost is buying the name.

I have a MiileMarker 12K and I am very happy with it. It is geared differently than the Warn, but pulls almost as hard on the first spool layer. As you get into the higher layers, it is not as powerful as the Warn. But it cost less than the Warn or Ramsey 8K, and seriously outpulls Warn or Ramsey 8K winches. So I think it was the best for the price.

I justified the less expensive winch based on the fact that I have never used one of my winches to pull myself out. I always need them to get someone else out. So how much do I want to spend helping everybody else?

I don't use mine a lot, but it has worked flawlessly when I did. I have a killer video of my truck pulling a 2000 Cherokee that had been rolled, up a 40' embankment. Like butta!!

A 12k winch is not required to pull cars onto a trailer and WAY over-rated for that type of use.....consider a 2500 - 4000 lb winch to be more than adequate for that type of winching.

Thumbs down I would strongly recommend against Mile Marker

I can NOT explain exactly where I work. However I am a Fleet Mechanic with approximately 850 of these units. Do NOT buy!
1st problem: the drum diameter is too small. They did this to allow for more cable, it does have great torque on forst layer.
2nd: When youare almost to the end of the cable (due to the too small drum) the cable will become unattached to the drum.
3rd:The gear box is a joke! It just simply does not do, it works great the day you install it but not 3 weeks later. We have onw resorted to leaving them stuck in high gear ( they have almost no torque and are sorry in high). After much debate we use a bigger piece of equipment to pull of "pick up trucks"
4th: The funnest, call and tell them you have trouble with you gear box. You will not buy based on customer service alone!
5th 1 good note, I have experienced minimal electrical or hydraulic ( ours are all power steering pump driven) issues compared to competition. I have experienced a lot of electrical issues with all others with age 5 years +.
Hope this helps

Well csramsey640 is talking about electric winch not hydraulic!
The Milemarker winches are good bang for the buck! not the best but definately will get the job done. I think their customer service is great, I have whatever I need in a couple days.
Hydraulic winches are more for commercial applications, they will pull harder longer, last a heck of a lot longer, very easy for beginners to use because of the slower speed. I've learned the electric are very good self recovery winches(quick short distance pulls over a log or rock) and hydraulic are better suited to recovery(long hard pulls out of mud bogs or up steep inclines) winching. The low speed is for winching and the high speed is just for winch line retreivel!

I had 3 warn winches in my life and I finally learned that they are no good. IMHO. I finally looked at the milemarker and with 8 years of many many long hard pulls, that 10.5k winch is awesome. I dont know if I had a fluke, but I bought another winch(10.5k) for my other truck because I liked them so much. 5 years and NO, NONE, ZERO problems. I definately test them in alaska. Been stuck with the 40ft gooseneck w/ groomer on the deck. Backed up to load and just broke the front and rear tire loose. Old milemarker pulled me right out.
This is a real story. Last year while I was on my 1 yr vacation to Iraq, some not so nice individual(hope they dont editsorry, had to to be done) came onto our property and stole my two atv winches(warn) and my hydraulic winch off my off road truck. I wrote to warn and milemarker both. Told them exactly what happened and warn wrote back and said it happens all the time and to pretty much "suck it up". The response I got back from milemarker was a little different. They thanked me for serving my country and sent me a factory reconditioned winch for Nothing, Zero, Nadda. That is customer service. Actually I lied on the no problems for the 10.5k winch. The pin that holds the lever on slid off. I called milemarker and told them that and within 3 days, I had 4 levers at my doorstep. Zero, Nadda, None was paid for the 2 day air and the parts to alaska. "They changed gear levers a few years back and sent me both levers just in case". So after I got home, guess what kind of atv winch I got. U guessed it. And those atv winches have not let me down in 6 months. We will see. But saying their customer service is horrible is BS. I havent run an electric 12k winch, but I would not hesitate one bit to get one.

Yea go for it the milemarker Is a great winch. Not as fast but good all around winch. I have had my 8000# mm on my trail cherokee for three years and not one problam. And if you could see it you would laugh, Its still coated in mud from my last trip. And it stays that way all the time.

P.S. Oh and I have never had to winch myself Its there to rescue others.HA HA
