Long Haulers--Hot Shotters

How can anyone make enough miles to make a living drivng over the road? Being restricted to 11 hours a day it is hard to average 450.00 miles a day!!
is the 11 hours you are allowed actual driving time or? My son came up on an accident on the road the other day and set for over three hours waiting for traffic to move again. Is this "downtime" considered part of his 11 hours drive time allowed for that day?
i am paying all expenses (except his food) and giving him 35 cents a mile--at 450.00 miles a day he is not going to be able to pay his bills.

tech. he is on duty driving if he is sitting in traffic. onduty not driving if on shoulder with engine off, if he can get off the road and legaly park he can log as sleeper if he has one or off duty. you might give him a company letter relieving him of load responsiliby during off duty hours(meals, motels ect.) on duty not driving counts againist daily hours of service but not driving time.

up until now we were doing 600 miles a day ---about 210.00 a day

with log book restrictions about 157.00 a day

should be a way to do the "paperwork" that would allow a few more miles in 11 hours.

Herb: the days of 2&3 log books and creative"paperwork" are pretty well gone. you can fix it in the truck but what with dot audits, some time stamps(some ports) b of l dates and times you can not fix it in the office. you can shave a little off load/unload time, fuel time ect. but thats about it. this driver went here to here at x miles and logged this much to do it.
it appears your a little hazy about legle logging, this is not the time to get creative. can get very expencive

Not wanting to do anything illegal , can't imagine that these over the roaders can't average at least 550 mile days out there?

Is that unreasonable ?

that's why you run 2 log books. lol i'm kiddin. the only way to make any money is to cheat a little bit. you have to but it's easy to make it look legal. if you take a load and you have plenty of dpwn time to play with before you leave, make it look like you left about 10 hours sooner so you can turn around when you make your drop and drive straight to the next drop. so i've heard at least. but runnin 100% legal, you're not gonna make any money.

....and the "experts" wonder why there is a shortage of truck drivers. I guess you really have to love it.
