So I towed 12k today for the first time w/the 05. Man what a difference 2 years makes. the 325/610 kills my 235/460. This truck tows so good youreally don't know that there is so much weight back there. My 03 was great at towing but there is no comparison to the 05.
Although I'm not exactly sure about the tranny. What is the tow haul button supposed to do. I know that is shifts later but I thought it was supposed to downshift also. I did not really notice any 4 to 3 shifts just 3 to 2 at low speeds. I thought it was supposed to be something like the torqueshift, If anyone knows about the 48re please le me know more about it. Thanks

 

The only auto tranny i know of that down shifts is the Allison in the Dmax.
never heard of a dodge doing that and if it does....Ya learn something new every day!

m not positive that it is supposed to, but I did read it in the manual, when in t/h when yoiu hit the brake it is supp to down shift. But I could be wrong. I think that the torqueshift ford downshifts, pretty hard too. it is nice for towing. My buddy has one.

 

DO not know about Dodge autos... But the Superduty I gladly got rid of for my 04 Dually automatically downshifted when slowing down with the tow/haul on.

In fact it was the best thing about that truck... I tow a 11800 lb trailer through alot of hilly terrain and when going down a grade it would automatically shift down a couple of gears and work almost like a standard when downshifting. I felt like Ford really did a good job with thier new auto tranny.... Of course if I could have gone more than 2 weeks without visiting the dealer and laying out a deductible for engine repairs I might still have it...

My DUally has the Manual 6 speed and I am very pleased with it.

the tow/haul mode on 05's holds the shifts longer and locks the Torque converter in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. that's about it. it will not lock out overdrive or downshift like others.

 

my 06 will downshift going down grades with the step on the brake also using the jake exhaust brake. is this not normal?

 

the 48r in an 05 will downshift after "prolonged braking" i have no idea how long that is supposed to be, mine has yet to do it

i hate my tranny for towing as soon as the warranty is out i will have ATS load the thing for serious towing

 

I loved my torx shift. It had what is called a "forced downshift" This happens when you pushed the gas pedal all the way to the floor and let off it would downshift, virtualy eliminating brakes. However the 48re does whatever it feels like doing. Still love my Cummins for pulling over the Ford..

 

I have played with this a bit while towing 8000+. I have noticed that it will downshift when I have applied the brakes for 15-20+ seconds, but only hard enough to activate the brake lights and not really hard enough to be slowing you down much. It will also downshift if you have the cruise control set and you are increasing speed past your speed set point.
