gps systems

Been looking at some gps systems, TomTom XXL540S and a garmin NUVI 550.
Anyone had any experience with these? I have read the reviews on both and I believe the TomTom sounded a little better. bestbuy has both and the TomTom on sale for $149.00 if you can call that a sale.

Always get there with the Garmin.

I have a Garmin 350 and have been real pleased with it. If you go to some of the electronic store web sites you can sometime find reconditioned units for a real good price. LOL.

I had a Tom Tom, it was a POJ. The maps for GPS units come from 2 sources. Garmins are NAVTEQ (USA) TomTom are from Europe.

I've got the Nuvi 265 and love it. I even play my MP3's loaded on it through my truck radio. Plus when playing music on it and using it for directions it breaks into the song and tells you the name of the road to turn on next. Cool!

Thanks for all the input. Garmin was my first choice. I was looking at the Nuvi 550. I believe it has the lower 48 Canada and AK. I found it at Tiger gps and will look at bestbuy today its close to where I live.

Garmin makes a GPS for all differant uses, what use do you have in mind?

The Nuvi 550 is basic on/off road GPS. I'd get the 500 with US topo maps.

Just to help out with the road atlas when traveling.

Travelling in a car or RV?
Car GPS will take more back/secondary roads, RV will stay on the interstates.
Why pay extra for a waterproof hiking GPS to use in the car?
I'd recomend one of the 700 series Garmin GPS for best car navigation.
For RV I'd say the 465T to keep you off the small back roads.

I have the 465T for work and absolutely LOVE it.
My only gripe w/ it is the AutoZoom. You cannot shut it off. It should be an option not forced on you.

We looked at a 255WT yesterday at bestbuy and played with it some it does have real time. It looks good but I am still doing research. I will have to have one that covers all of the US and Canada. It will mostly be used when we are traveling with the camper

This board may help some......Ben

Definitely my choice is Garmin. The TomTom I've used was awkward, not as intuitive as the Garmin. But that could from owning a couple of Garmin's.

Costco will have the 765T with lifetime map updates for $250 starting March 4th.

I've been looking to upgrade my old Street Pilot and I think the 765T is what I'll get.

Good luck, it IS hard to narrow down all the choices out there.

Try to get the stock dodge nav system that is called the RB1 system i believe. Thats what i would like to get.
