Good "box" for towing?

I was going to get a Van Aaken v5 , but here they are out of business,

Im not "up" on all these new power boxes and dont want some drag race power box all the kids are getting to tear up their trucks and burning up there VP44s.

Would like something beter timing and fueling for towing my 5er and mpg, with good low end grunt for going up hills and driveing into stiff wind etc, Smooth power and reliable

I have had all isspro guages , a shift kit, beter fuel lines and fittings and a good lift pump, and just put a new vp44 on my '99 4x4 CTD.

Only ones I know of are edge EZ, Diablo power puck, Xmonster what ever it is.

Thanks Rick

Smarty Jr. would be the best tuner for your application.

I had read up on those Smartys, They cost alot and you have to take your own main computer off your motor and give it to some guy sitting in a little room in Italy or france. What happens when the the smarty screws up? Your screwed.

Im not sure if thats wise...

I don't think you have to take the main computer off I bought the bigger version of smarty and i didnt have to take my computer off and send it to them. Things might be different with the smarty jr. you might try to contact
Bob at Mads he could answer that question for sure.

Ok i did some looking around and you could not run the smarty jr. due to the year of your truck, you would have to get the smarty sr. which is 645.00 for your year model in the DTR store.

It has been a long time since you had to send your ECM off for programming. Check out the Smarty. It has several programs in it. You plug into the OBDI port under the dash and program it yourself.

I ran an Edge EZ on my 98.5 and it performed flawlessly for six years. With my camper load and 285's w/3.54 gears however, the tranny would shutter going in o/d. Weak 47re's.

Now, they are all plug and play. You just plug into the diagnostics port and reprogram the computer yourself. Very quick and easy.

Ok I got you on the smarty. I thought smarty was some underground, dark closet deal. I thought cummins sued them or something for altering their patented computer ecm or something like that. Is smarty a legitament Co. or black market?

Legit... And VERY well respected. It's the best programer out for the 3rd gens and it's not to shabby for the 2nd gens.

The smarty is nice, but what your wanting is just a bit more umph without lots of mods and breaking the bank account, corect? Then pickup one of the used edge ez's here in the classifieds for under $300. Much more power than that and then your looking for trans upgrades.

I'm just running the Edge Mileage Max and really like it. Extra 35 ponies and 70 ft lbs of torque won't kill the tranny and its a nice for towing. Never see anything over 1100 EGT.

Just my .02
