Going to get my trailer!!
I don't think I'd worry about egts just going through the gears to get to speed short bursts of 1200+ are not going to hurt engine, sled pullers and drag racers exceed 1600* for 10-20 seconds with no damage to engine, just watch temps on your long pulls. From what I've read from 98.5 to current will hit 1200* stock. So hook up that new toy and go flogg on that truck and see what it will do for egts then, I'm thinking your comfort zone is maybe to conservative. Enjoy your new toy.

Do you have an 04.5? I just picked up a new trailer last friday. My EGT's pulling on flat land was around 800 deg at 70 mph. The 04.5 (325/600) engines run hotter than the 04 (305/555). It would spike up to around 1200 during takeoff. I feel your safe zone will be higher (1300). I read it on here about the new engine parts Cummins put in the 325/600 to hand the extra heat because of the 3rd injection event and Cat.
I rolled this across the scales on our way home from camping two weeks ago

weighted 21,970 lbs. We pulled two 6% grades and one 7% grade on the way home and egt's can definetly be the enemy but I usually grab 5th gear and run 55-60 mph and maintain 1200-1300 degrees no problem. This is running the EZ on 2 and Juice on 2. Boost on a good continous uphill pull will stay right around 30 psi. It's hard to talk real accuratly about #'s on here because the air that we are all driving in is different but if your boost is low something is not working to correctly.

Spooler, yes it is a 600 motor. I have head that 1300 was safe but I am yet to find that in writting. I think that I can still blow 1300 out of the water easily but I will update everyone in a few weeks. I am moving so The trailer will have to be moved just under 400 miles to the appalachin mtns. Short of going to the rockies that should be a good test.
T398 Your boost numbers are what I was seeing. The problem was an RPM thing. Anything over 2100 RPM then the EGTs went up like a rocket. Lugging along at 1600 RPM would have lower EGTs than 2200 RPM. I kept them between 19-2100 RPM though. EGTs stayed low the other day when taking the trailer to storage. Maybe it was having a bad day before. Of course my speed as much slower and I only had to ga a few miles.

I pull a 35ft Carriage Compass KS3. GVW 14030. (see my photos) My combined on my truck is right at 21,000lbs. Last trip to the scales was 20,300. I have to keep the fiver light for the most part having a washer/dryer and bedroom A/C unit which adds another 210lbs or close to it. My truck is somewhat lighter than yours. I bought my Carriage to match the trucks Max. Wanted a Cari-Lite, but it was to big in weight at 16,400 GVW.
My 2000 Dodge handles the load with a stock configuration at 235hp and 460ft/lbs of torque. Runs along at 10.5mpg at 65. If I back it down to 55 and put in 5th gear, it will do 13.5 mpg. It does need more rear ratio if I decide to head west and maybe a small box.
You have no signature with your posts. So other than the box you have, what else is there.
Are the tires on your truck stock size?
I assume you have 3:73 gears.

Dave, your sig only shows up on the first post per page now. To answer your questions. Yes the truck is on stock rubber. She came with the 265s and I have another set in the garage as spares. I think they will make about 50K before getting swapped out. Yes I do have the 3.73 gears in the truck. The airbox is stock with an added 4" PVC duct to the bottom. The filter minder barely moves now. I did the tone ring mod and have the quad std box. Other than that she is stock.

The truck will heat up lugging down low also. Just not as fast. I had a new flash put in and the truck seems to be running a little better empty. I will have to yank the trailer to see how she runs now.
Rob,
I'm running a 4.5 3500 QC 4x4 pulling a 9.5K 35' Titanium 5er. Cross country last year the EGT's only max'd going over the Rockies, noramlly when towing is 800-1000F. Was originally having an issue with no power, told the dealer, he reflashed, there was something about a TSB on this. Runs great now. BTW, the 10K trip showed an avg of 11.5mpg, with the 48RE and 3.73's.
Sounds like you have an asthma issue.

ARMY which flash did you get? I dont think that the truck is having a breathing issue. The rear bumper was clean after the trip. Not trying to be in denial or anything but boost was correct, fuel preasure always 9.5+lbs and as I said clean bumper. I did have the cold weather white smoke/ low milage flash performed on monday.
Well it seems like the flash helped the truck run cooler. EGTs are still 600 where they would be around 400 on the 12V but not running to hot otherwise. Yes I realize the ISB runs hotter. Fuel milage has taken a dump though. Last tank was 1 MPG lower thn it should be. Since the reflash the boost has been coming in quicker on a hill with a small load.
Last trip the fuel was bad but the truck got a wopping 12.5 MPG hauling 4K pound. I refilled and got 15.4 on the way back with a 2300lb empty trailer then empty for 3 days back and fourth to work. I changed the fuel filter and it looked good. The truck barely leaves a haze out the pipe now. Fuel preasure is still 9-10 PSI constant under all conditions. I have been racking my brain trying to figure this out. Something is definatly up. The only ideas I have is to run the valves when I get a chance or take her back to a TX dealer that knows how to work on these things. Any other ideas?
