Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

I have the 4.10's in my 4x4 HO CTD 2500 . I live in a metro area, a lot of suoerslab driving. I usually get 15- 16 mpg empty, driving near 70mph...and 13-13.5mpg when towing a 10,500lb 29'TT, also driving averaging 60 to 70 mph. The truck has plenty of power to spare; and unfortunately I use it. Eventually, I will slow down and the mileage will increase. The 4.10's are worth the mileage hit for the torque gain. That's my .02 worth.

I have a chance to buy a new 2004 3500 4x4 Quadcab, auto, with the 4.10 rearend. I wanted the 3.73, but the price on this $41,000 truck is $31,650. I want to know what fuel milage difference between the two rearends would be empty and towing 8,000 lbs.

Thanks in advance, Michigan Steve

4.10 rule if you are towing a real trailer.

Is the 8000lbs mentioned "real"?

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

Heres my 2 bits. With our 2 indentical trucks. The only differances are 3.54's and 33" tires. And 4.10's and 30" tires. The 3.54 truck gets 23mpg the 4.10 truck gets 14. I hope with 37" tires I'll boost the 4.10's economy up quite a bit.

I get around 11 pulling just over 16,000 (the trailer GVRW is 20,000) and 24,000 combined. I do keep my speed around 60 to 65 when towing. Solo I get 19. Just slightly less than I got with my 97 2500 12 valve pulling 11,500. The 97 had 4.10 as well. Didn't even hesitate to buy the 4.10 this time as I needed that ratio to tow this rig. However if you are only going to be towing 8,000 and have the option I would go with the 3.73 but wouldn't pass up a good deal because it had 4.10. If you keep your foot in it, you will pay no matter what ratio you have. FWIW

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

Just filled this morning. Travel is mainly mountain roads, what goes up also, goes down. Steepest grade 14% for one mile, one 11% for 1.5 miles, several over 7% which I travel everytime I go anywhere from home. Elevations between 90 feet and 4000 feet.

The following is from non-towing since the end of October:

1797 miles, 90.8 gals. #2 D, 19.8 mpg, with my 5 speed and 4.10 axle.

Towing to Alaska this past summer 9917 miles 757 gal. #2D, 13.1 mpg.

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

110 mile daily commute. 17-18 if I am thinking about mileage, 15-16 if I am rodding on it. 30 miles each way in traffic, 25 at 70. On a long trip with cruise on 75 or higher it is about 14.
Towing at 19k at safe speeds is between 10 and 13 depending on terrain.
11.5' camper and small trailer is 13.

01.5 3500 4x4, all hand figured, the confuser is way off with mods.

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

Just turned 1-year old and 28,000 miles. Half were towing a 30-foot enclosed race car trailer at 8500#, with most tows being up and over the Sierras back and forth to California tracks. With the trailer I run the speed limit, but seldom exceed 64. Went back east to Vermont (7800-miles round trip) without the trailer and ran the speed limit all the way. So -with the trailer I average about 13.5. Without it, although running faster, I get around 20. Average at 28,000 miles on a spreadsheet, has been 15.8. Like others on the board, I don't warm it up, just drive at low throttle until engine and gear train is warmed up. I also let it idle at rest stops as it's easier on the starter. As for towing power, I never have to drop below 5th gear unless I'm behind a PS.
