Fuel Milage with 4.10?

I have a chance to buy a new 2004 3500 4x4 Quadcab, auto, with the 4.10 rearend. I wanted the 3.73, but the price on this $41,000 truck is $31,650. I want to know what fuel milage difference between the two rearends would be empty and towing 8,000 lbs.

Thanks in advance, Michigan Steve

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

I dont know how the 2004 4.10's compare but I know my 98.5 is constantly 12.5-13 mpg empty. I haven't hauled on a long enough trip to tell you how it is when hauling. I can't get any better than 13. They may have changed things in 2004 or it may just be my driving. I have heard of people with 4.10's getting better but not as good as the 3.73's

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

I am getting around 17.5 to 18 combined. When on the highway IF I remember to keep it at 65 I am a touch over 20. However, mine is 2 wheel drive and is finally broken in.

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

Overall, you won't find that 4.10's take much of a hit, if any in fuel mileage. I just posted this on another post, but is applicable here too:

My mileage per tank rose @18k but was simultaneous with Amsoil'ing the diffs, tranny and xfer case so I can't say for sure I've seen the magical moment that CTDs gain improved fuel mileage. Went from 16.8 overall (fifty some tanks worth) to 18.4 mpg (last 3 tanks).

My best AND worst tankful mileage both occured before I had 2600 miles on the clock: 14.3 & 20.2. I do drive fast (typical traffic here) on the superslab, and that takes a hit out of mileage with 4.10's. I can watch the computer readout rise if I can maintain 2000 rpm (~62 mph).

Oh, for towing; when I have almost 9000 out back, I'm getting around 13.5 mpg.

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

Hello
I have a 2001.5 2500 4x4 with the 4:10 rear end. I run 315 BFGs on it when not pulling the 5er. I see 18 mpg when running at 55/60 down the interstate the faster I go the worse the mileage gets. I just got back from a trip out to Missiouri with our gooseneck and running empty down the interstate at 65/70 mph I had 12/13.5 miles per gallon. Loaded on the way back with total weight of just over 20,000 LBS (truck, trailer and tractor) the best I had was 10.5 and the worse was 9.7. This includes the morning warm up and sitting in a rest stop idleing while we take a pee break.
I do not know how the new engine perform yet, we have a 2004 with the 48re and HO engine we have not pulled with it yet.
Good Luck
See Ya
Chris

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

My normal driving speed is 60-65mph. That is why I ordered 4.10s on my '99.

Towing 14,000lbs, I averaged 14.1mpg with my DD3 injectors. I installed supermentals and it dropped to 11.8mpg.

Empty, if I keep it around 62mph, I break 20mpg every time.

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

My normal milage is about14.5- 16 combined sometimes at speeds up to 75 I run 285/75/16's I would get a little better with the stock tires but I like the 285's. I reaaly like the response after you get rolling with 4.10's Just punch and go I pull about 6200 so no big deal there but fuel mpg goes down pretty good for me in traffic sometimes down to 10.5. Still better than my old burb. One thing I have read here is that if you are running an auto the 4.10 might be better to help keep the flow up increased rpm etc.. dunno on that one just what I hear.

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

Could my poor fuel mileage be caused by letting it idle quite a bit? I usually let my truck idle for a few minutes at a time a few times a day? I know its not that good to let it idle too long but its better than turning the truck on and off if I'm only gonna be a few minutes or turning it off when its still cold.

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

Running solo, if I keep it at 65mph, Ram will get 20 mpg. Towing I get 11 mpg. Only have 4800 miles on it now, but it has been getting the same mileage since new. About 4000 miles is towing the 5ver. Ram scales out at 8300 pounds with the wife and I and a full tank of gas.
When I let it warm up you can watch the mpg gauge, it drops rather quick. Don't let it warm up anymore, I just keep the rpm's below 1500 until it warms up. Ram will tow the 5ver (13580 pounds) idling up to 3rd gear.

I'm over 20 if I stay under 70. Average about 12.4 pulling 16000# fiver which is high and wide.

I average around 17.5-18mpg empty, if I stay under 70mph. Pulling my 5ver, (approx 14k) I get around 10.5-11mpg. I dont quite get the mileage that goodfuelmilagebob gets, but my truck is a 4x4, so maybe thats the difference...Cat Cracker.

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

I pull a trailer about 8,000# with about 1200# in the bed and get between 12 and 13 mpg and get 17+ to 18 empty. I do the milage calculations on every tank and keep them in a spreadsheet. total average combined driving at 17,000 miles is 14.9. A darn sight better than I was getting with my 01 gasser and my 02 SO

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

I have the 4.10's and so far getting about 14mpg highway and city driving. Just got back from the beach pulling the 8500 fiver and got about 10mpg. Truck has 1500 miles on it now. The numbers are from the computer...not sure how accurate that is.

Hopefully it will get better!

Re:Fuel Milage with 4.10?

Running empty I get a solid 21 mpg with the 4:10 with my best being 22.4 during the summer months. 21 is interstate at 72 mph and 22.4 is running two lane roads at 55 mph.

Loaded, the worst I've got is 14.5. Mileage is central to south Georgia, rolling hills, primarily Interstate 16 (little to no traffic). I'm running sythetic oil and differential lube.
