Disabled Vets and National/State Parks
Disabled Vets and National/State Parks
I was told a while back that disabled vets can go to any National Parks for free as well as camping for a limited time for free. I've been googling it and can't seem to find any solid information. None of the Fed sites I've visited post any clear policy on it either.
Does anyone have an info on this?
I know there are some states that have this benefits for their State Parks. I found this one for Oregon on the RV.net site, but couldn't find anything on National Parks.
I'll keep searching but I thought I'd ask here to see if you guys know anything about this.
effective Nov 11, 2005 and also for active duty on leave. To bad for me it's on the other side of the contintent.

It's called a "Golden Access Passport." Its good at all National parks, forests, etc... for "Free" entrance. As far as I know it does not work for state park/camping. It gives you a 50% discount on camping/tours etc... in the National parks. I have one and it's great! Usually you get them @ the gate of National parks. I don't know if you can get them online. You just fill out the form @ the gate and they give you the card instantly, at least they did with mine. Disabled Vets and Handicap are eligible for them. I hope this answers your questions. If not, let me know.

P.S Here is a link I found: http://www.nps.gov/fees_passes.htm

That looks like it might be what I'm looking for. I was told that camping was free though. It could've been an big fish story.
On recreation.gov, under the Federal Recreation Pass Programs, the Golden Access Passport is closes thing to free access.
I'll look into it.
Thanks for the response.

Yep, you can get a Golden Access pass from any national park. It's a good idea to have your VA card available if you don't qualify for a state disabled parking/license plate. Wife is a Fee Ranger and I'm a volunteer campground host at Death Valley National Park. The card will allow you 1/2 price on camping. If you are a military retiree and a DV and camp at bases ask whether the Base FAMCAMP recognizes the Golden Access card. Some do and some don't. It's always a good idea to ask at State and County parks if they recognize the card as well. Again, some do and some don't. We work at Death Valley as Seasonals (Sept-May) and at Oregon hatcheries (ODFW) during the summer. Maybe we will see you at Mesquite Spring Campground or the Grapevine Ranger Station!
