I'm a site sponsor. We sell 5th wheel hitches (TrailerSaver). Not here to sell, but another option is a 5th wheel to gooseneck adaptor. We make one with an air-ride system. Several manufacturers make the straight "tube" for the adaptor. They work quite well and clear up your truck bed. You just have to install the ball. That usually runs $200 to $300. B&W makes a turnover ball that's really cool.

I was looking at the air-ride 5ver they sell and what turned me off was the price tag! $2500 bucks is A LOT of cash! May be the best but $2500 for just a hitch is a lot of money!

I have and AirSafe 5th wheel and am very happy with it. I is rated for 25K, fits in standard Reese rails pull four pins and it is out. The standard Binkley-Holland Commercial Anvil comes with the hitch and removes with just two pins. Saves on your truck especially in the oilfield and a great towing experience. I had the reese rails installed and installed the hitch myself.

By the way, we run a sale in December on the TrailerSaver. $200 off and another $147 off if you want the TruControl brake controller as well. It's the only time of year we run a sale. We also make non air-ride hitches that are more in line with the average hitch cost. They still use the Holland Binkley head that pivots in two directions. Very nice, solidly built hitches.

Bought it directly from Airsafe. Visit their website at at www.airsafehitches.com . I was in Edmonton Alberta at the time and they shipped it from their warehouse in California somewhere. I have been very happy with it. Takes all the chucking out when pulling on rough roads and it has got to be a lot easier on my 5th wheel. Many folks go for the air bag pin box on the fith wheel but why not have an air ride for all the trailers you pull. No twisting of the truck frame or bed is another plus. Just set the air pressure in the bags for the weight you are hauling and go.

Yes, Hensley and AirSafe are the only companies offering full air-ride hitches. Definately an advantage over the pin-box air-bag. The differences are:

AirSafe: goes with the "more air bags the better" theory. 4 air bags.

Hensley TrailerSaver: "Level beam design." The hitch head is mounted to a pivot point in front of and level with the head surface. This transfers both the up/down and fore/aft motion into the air bags. 2 air bags and two shock absorbers.

Prices are similar. Lots of different options.

I got my B&W and 5th wheel companion at Tweetys. They are just north of San Antion http://www.tweetys.com/index.asp?Pag...&Category=1284
This hitch was an easy install for me. I did have to buy a 4" hole saw bit for $30. (I should have checked Harbor Freight) The rest just hand tools. A torque wrench should be on hand too. Took me a little over two hours by myself. A helper would be good. Instructions were very clear. I installed on a 2007 3500 Dodge too.

I'm convinced that properly adjusted electric trailer brakes with a good brake controller (TruControl is ours) will give you better braking than hydraulic disc brakes. The problem is still the delay in the actuator. The manufacturers are getting better, but it's still an issue. Electric brakes are immediate, though they can be a pain if they're out of adjustment or you have wiring problems.

If you do go hydraulic, I like the Actibrake system sold by Kodiak. The TruControl works well with that system, too.
