Cross Country Trip Questions

Hey all, in right at a month, me and the wife will be transferring to my new command out in Chantilly, VA...we'll be going up to Las Vegas first to pick up the equipment trailer that I bought, then throwing her car on it and making the rest of the voyage towing with the truck...

Here is the route

US-93 S,to the I-40 E then on to the I-640 E, then back onto the I-40 E again, on to the I-81 N, hit the I-66 E and lastly VA-234-BUS/ VA-234 N...

Any big grades in there coast to coast gurus? I can't think of any that I recall on the 40...couple up and downhill passes on the 81, but nothing too bad that I remember...anything else to be aware of? Load will only be about 6000lbs and I won't be getting over 65 on the whole trip. Thanks in advance and be looking for the mileage results in the very near future!

I'd only suggest carrying an extra fuel filter and try to use the truck stops. I have traveled cross country several times and and have to change a plugged fuel filter on side of the road, more than once. Good luck!

Enjoy the trip, don't loose the truck in Vegas[laugh][laugh].

It's not ME I'm worried about, bud...it's the little lady...she likes having a couple glasses of wine, then at that point, I HOPE to be back on the road again...she'd bet the farm on her confidence if she had a little buzz goin on...:o

Should be a fun trip...see some of the country I haven't seen before...

P.S. I just made an order a week ago through Geno's to get myself stocked back up on all my filters...should be good to go in that department on the trip...

I doubt any of the grades will be noticeable with that truck and those mods :D

Set the cruise and enjoy.

couple of 5% grades 2 to 4 miles long in Tennessee between Knoxville and Nashville.

Minor Hills - minimal good food along the route

You might feel your truck work just a tad harder on I-40 between Ashfork & Williams, Arizona...but with the mods you have, not likely. There is zero good food between 'Vegas & Ashfork, and again between Winslow & Albuquerque. Several decent restaraunts in Williams, numerous good food joints in Flagstaff, and one in Winslow (at the train station).

Thanks for the responses thus far guys! I really appreciate them...some good info all around. That dang dieselboss.com site makes me red in the face though...I can't believe and never in my life thought I would see such outrageous prices for fuel...heck I'm only 26 and I remember back when I got my license, I would take the old man's truck loaded with the tractor behind it to the station, diesel was $0.79/gal (the good stuff back then too) and it would cost roughly $35-40 to fill BOTH of them...my wife just told me that it cost her $141 to fill up the other day...just the truck alone. [verymad][verymad]

being that you are in San Diego, cant you cross the border and fuel up with Mexican diesel at a fraction of the cost???? Just a thought.

I would have to buy a passport to do it...and drive about 45 minutes to an hour, then wait in the long line of cars that piles up every so often to get back into the states...be inspected, etc...I've thought about it a few times and outweighed going down there...really good suggestion though.
