I can't speak definitively for 2003 but for 2004 the towing capacities are different for SRW and DRW. Since the two years basically have the same frame/body then I'd find it fairly hard to believe that the towing capacity changed. I'm not trying to get in a peeing contest but we don't want people overloading their trucks so I think it's worth bringing up.

The only reason the Idea came up was that I thought I had seen trucks like ours pulling a trailer with a backhoe. I may have been mistaken or maybe they were just pulling it a short distance?

i just hauled a john deere 310 4x4 backhoe that weighed in at ~17,000.

my weight on the scale was 31980
with 20,480 on the trailer.

the truck handled it well, as long as the hoe was loaded properly on the trailer, if i have too much tongue weight it beats the heck out of me while driving on the highway.

granted i have a drw 6 spd, but my last ruck was a srw psd, and it would haul these loads fine as well, and that was 355 gears and 35 tires

The difference (13k vs. 16k towing capacity) depends on whether you have the 3.73 or 4.11 rear end... nothing to do with DRW vs. SRW.

Oooops, I stand corrected. Sorry about that. I went to www.dodge.com and compared a bunch of different trucks and it looks like axle ratio is the determining factor.
