Can I haul a backhoe on a 20ft trailer?
Surfing craigslist this morning and found a deckover 16,000 gvr deckover GN trailer with 8ft slide in ramps. 20ft long and I'd imagine dual 8K single wheel axles.
So my math on this would be 13500lb backhoe, 4500lb trailer. 18000 total minus 20% on my truck would be 14400 total on the trailer and 3600 on the truck.
I'm looking for a bit longer trailer and also occasionally rent a backhoe and pay to move it.
Big question is a 310 john deere backhoe is advertised at 23ft transport length. Can I curl the bucket in and let the backhoe hang off a foot or 2?

yes, it works perfectly. you will have room to spare. we have a 20' deck big tex gn trailer with a 4' ramp and 4' folding ramps that we haul ours on along with our 710's i gross out at 44,000 lbs with the 710
don't see a pix of backhoe but here is a pix of a line truck i brought back from north Carolina, about 3,600 miles round trip grossing 39,600

Thanks, I have no pics, usually end up with a JD 310J. 23 ft long.

Mostly wondering if I curled the bucket down if I could spare a ft or 2. Also if the trailer will allow me to balance properly.
The one I'm looking at doesn't have a dovetail like the one in that pic. Just 20ft.

Here is the trailer.
Looking at the John Deere site again it looks like the backhoe actually weighs like 15000lbs.

Price looks decent, but IMHO, you'd be sitting on the side of the road with a broken trailer before too long if your backhoe weighs anywhere close to 15k.

You could definitely pull it, but the issue is for how long? I'd wager you'd end up with a broken spring, or axle, or even a blowout or two, unless you take it real easy. I assume the trailer has brakes, if not, then I wouldn't want it.
Honestly I'd pull it once in a bluemoon. I was just looking for a longer trailer than my 16ft utility trailer and found this and my brain started sparking.
The backhoe I'm referring to is a rental and if I get it I find it easier to get it for a month because I can do multiple things with it.

If that JD only weighs 16k, they've REALLY cheapened them up over the years. I had a Ford 655 that weighed over 20k, and my little JCB 210S weighs over 14k.
Just to give you an idea of how small the JCB is:

And yes, I've hauled WAAAY overweight, but never on public roads. The load in the pic below is over 200,000 pounds, but from the landing to the mill was all on private roads. I'd never do that where someone besides myself might be put in danger.
i guess i always do things different than others. when i started out in 1967 i could not afford to get the proper trailers or equipment. i learned to make what i had work. i had a 2010 jd backhoe that was about the same weight as the 310 the trailer was a pintle hitch 16' long dual wheel single axle with no brakes. i hauled it that way for about five years. i agree you should get a gn trailer like mine but the one you show will work. it will be hard to load it and unload the 310 on my 20'deck balances perfectly with the rear tire centered between the two axles and the boom curled up and on the dove tail with about 4' space between the front bucket and the gn you can lock the boom up and let it hang over the back. with a little practice you can load and unload the backhoe on flat ground easy.
Ha, I have an old Ford I use quite a bit because I own it. Getting unreliable though, time is money. Trust me me and my boys we do it the po dunk way and get it done perfect.
Gonna keep the Ford for brush hogging.
I've just been renting lately, pretty fair prices really.
I need a better trailer think I'll see if I can get some time today and go check this one out.
