Anyone fix a rooftop A/C unit? (coleman)

I have a 3yr old TT with a coleman mach 3 rooftop A/C. Fan motor "growls" but would not turn until I spun it, left A/C on remainder of trip and it cooled fine. Looking to see if anyone has installed the "hard start kit" and how long it takes where they purchased it from (how much$). Thanks!

Sounds like a bad capacitor!

Yes...sounds like the fan cap. A hard start kit only applies to the compressor. The cap is only about $4.00, and while you are in there give the fan motor a few drops of 10W non detergent.

Some of the fan motors are shaded pole - no cap. PSC motors with a bad cap. will run whichever way you spin them because without the cap. to complete the start winding circuit, only the run winding has power and it doesn't care which way it runs the rotor. Shaded pole will only run one way unless you turn the rotor end-for-end in the case. Also, clean the cond. coil good while you're in there. Craig

Thanks for the replies! It is running after replacing the 7.5MFD motor start capacitor. Had to get it at a "wholesale only" heating and cooling supply. When asked for what account, I replied Mr. Cash, and had them add sales tax and was out the door for $4.25 Vs. $125 at the RV service place.
