Air bag question...need help, another thing too....

Exclamation Air bag question...need help, another thing too....

Ok, the truck I have currently has airbags on the rear. They're airlift 5k#'s. I'm selling my truck and getting a 3rd gen. Here's the question..

I need them on my new truck, but the weight I'm pulling I was wondering if it was possible and ok to put 2 bags on each side??? I'm looking at my truck right now and if the other one is set up the same way, I'd need to take off the overload single leaf on the top off, then 2 bags could fit...pretty much side by side. maybe 2-3 inches between them. Is that going to have any effect on anything at all?? Or should a regular setup be ok??

One other thing, I need to find out exactly how much tongue wieght is on the gooseneck hitch when loaded up. What's the equation for that?? I know I've heard it before but not too sure. That would help me out and maybe I wont need 2 bags. Maybe that's a dumb idea.... I'm just thinking and need to bounce it off you guys...see what youd recommend. And no, I can't get a mini semi or anything like that at all. I have to stick with this size truck.

Gooseneck should have 20-25% of it's wieght on the pin. That is subject to load distribution and trailer axle placement.

That being said, if your single set of airbags(I think the Firestones are rated at 5k per pair.) cannont handle the load of the trailer, then you are carrying a very dangerous amount of weight. You have well exceeded your GVW and GCW. That much weight is axle breaking weight.

My initial thought is; If you need 10, 000lbs of additional suspension support for your rear axle, you've got the wrong truck or you need to downsize your trailer.

Like a previous poster said, pin weight should be approximately 20% of the trailers weight.

Ditto on previous posts. I'll also add this, don't get a SRW one ton and expect to carry the load. Tires are a lower limit than the axle.

Oh yeah, it'll be a dual rear wheel. I'm figuring out the weight on the pin right now.......Hmmm, well it comes out to be about 5800# on the pin. But my load is no different from tons of guys around me with the same size trucks doing that weight or even more sometimes. I haul 300 square bales and the trailer weight is 9500# empty, and the total is about 29k# I know guys hauling about 350 squares day in and day out and about 23 round bales.

I didn't think it was that much weight on the front at all.
