2006 DRW and towing info

This may surprise some of you.

My new 2006 QuadCab 3500 4x4 CTD with 2 adults and full tank of full weighs:

4760 front GVW is 5200
3580 rear GVW is 9350
8340 pounds total.

Truck GVW is 12,200 pounds Dodge specs is 23,000 pounds for total GCVW.

I hauled my new 37' Cedar Creek-Day Dreamer from Charlotte to home Friday and weighed both. Truck full of fuel and RV was bone stock empty except for LP gas.

Total rig was:

4780 front
6040 rear Total truck was 10,820
That leaves me to spare to load in truck or hitch of:

12,200 minus
10,820 ------ 1380 pounds

RV GVW is 15,500 pounds. Empty is 10,960 on axles and 2480 total load on pin. I did not add wrong. The RV put 20#s on the front axle.

15,500 RV GVW
13,440 dry weight That leaves me 2,060 pounds I can load into dry RV before it maxs out the GVW of the RV. Before you jump the gun, remember as I load the RV some of the load will transfer to the kinpin.

Now before some of you go ballastic look at my totals:

Right now with brand new 3500 dually I am at 21,780 pounds. That leaves me only 1,220 pounds to spare.

They say 23,000# is total GCVW for this truck. I am at:

13,440 for empty RV
8,340 for empty 3500
21,780 total empty.

Remember these figures before you order your new 3500 DRW MegaCab with only a GVW of 10,500 pounds.

I don't get it.....are you saying the 3500 MC DRW only has a 600 lb higher GVWR than the 3500 MC SRW? That just doesn't make any sense. Is there any particular reason that the 3500 MC DRW only has a 10,500 lb GVWR while the QC has a 12,200 GVWR? The trucks appear to be identical in every aspect of the frame, suspension and driveline....the difference is the cab configuration and box length. Am I wrong?

CTD Nut,

Every since the figures first came out listing Mega Dually GVW I have been ranting.

Maybe I'm an idiot, but if I read your specs, front gvw=5200 and rear gvw=9350, wouldn't that make your total gvw 14550? That's just what I get from reading your post, I have no idea.

Tells me you need to keep your trailer 1000lbs under its GVW to make sure you stay within your Combined Gross Weight, according to Dodge, until your out of warranty.

I keep my trailer 1000lbs under the GVW. I don't full time so its not a problem.
When I start to travel later this year, I'll change the rear out, installing an 4:10, and add a small hp/torque chip or programer. The truck has 155k on it and is not in any type of warranty. I try to stay within the factory ratings for insurance purposes.

I wanted a Mega Cab to tow with. Can't stand the looks of that short short bed dually. Even with that, given the curb weight shown above and the combined capacity of 23,000lbs, and my trailer loaded out to max, would only give me 800 lbs of margin.

I'm going to wait one more year and see what happens with the Mega Cab,
and the 6.7 Cummins, not ruling out the 5500 new Dodge if it happens, or I'll find a used Freightliner, Peterbilt in a Class 5 or 6 or at the worse, which is the cheapest, a small Class 7 single screw tractor. We all should know something about the Dodges today.

As far as the front axle differances, I have no idea unless its just a differance in front suspension.

The 5200 is GAWR not vehicle weight as is the 9350 rear GAWR. The sum of the two GAWR's does not equal the total GVWR. The combined GAWR's are always higher than the GVWR to allow for potential uneven loading of the axles. It is perfectly possible to be loaded in a manner that can put you over on a GAWR but still under the GVWR.

First loaded camping trip this weekend

We now have the Day Dreamer loaded and loaded on the truck. We will be making our first trip to the BlueRidge Parkway tomorrow. We plan on stopping at Marion to weigh the entire rig. Will also post pictures over the weekend.

Anyone planning on getting a new diesel in the next couple of years better grab an '06 . Emissions on the '07's are expected to raise prices by several thousand dollars and you know they'll cost more to service . Check out the Truck Paper available free at truckstops for single axle heavier trucks . I saw a nice '05 medium duty International cab/chasis with a stand-up sleeper listed there a couple of weeks ago .
