For me, its all oilfeild work, and you just have to know people, but I sure didnt when I started, and you might laugh, but I had to take the crap jobs that no one else wanted. I advertised in oilfield directories, and tried to find out who the rig consultants were and made calls. Also did lots of ag-related hauling, picked this up at trade shows and such. I dont know your area, but you have to find a way to get your name out there however possible, then do a good job, and referrals will take you to retirement!

I can make money pulling idiots out of ditches after the first snowfall as they feel they can still drive 80 on the highway when there is snow on the ground

Well, looking at a map, there should be a healthy horse population in your region, which means there is cattle and horse equipment needed. i would look at hauling/delivering horse stalls, feeders, and such. If you have a local co-op that sells this stuff, find out if they have a need, and if not then see who the manufacturers are, and contact them directly. Also, you might consider hauling trailers (stock, horse) into your area, or RV's into Canada.

Only a dresser and a rocking chair? HAHA.
He should just sell it where he is and buy new stuff where he's going. Why pay 500-700 to keep keep that stuff? I doubt it's worth it. I know you want to make money though...

You'd better price Commercial Vehicle insurance before you jump off that cliff. I've done stuff for money by word of mouth, but if you start doing it as a side business, you'd better cover yourself.
