Weird Code....

I was using the "advanced search" deal on the site searching for "fuel leak" and I get a code like this when I hit search;
"Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 50331648 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 35 bytes) in /opt/www/html/dev/search.php on line 1160"

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Hit control alt and delete at the same time, select system manager, if prompted, hit processes and see which ones are using all your memory. Also try a different browser..Mark

Guys, that error has nothing at all to do with your own computer. It's a memory allocation error on the site. Sounds like the site admins need to tweak some memory parameters.

I can personally guarantee that's the cause. In normal life I'm a unix systems administrator and I manage systems exactly like the one this site is running on.

Memory allocations of a wide variety happen all the time on a running server, and what's happening is that periodically when someone tries to open a page, or do some other action on the site, the server isn't able to allocate the chunk of memory that the site software is requesting at that particular time. It's very normal that this particular problem is only hitting some and not others.

I actually have yet to see this error here myself.

Guys, we have such a HUGE amount of information on this forum that if you search for too broad a term it overwhelms the server and gives you that error message.

Try being more specific in your search or use the advanced search and then type your request into the Google search box there and let Google do the work for you It searches all the files on DTR and displays them for you without the memory issues.

Gents,
There a quarter of a million threads to search... we don't have a big enough server to search for a lot of common terms... it shuts down to keep from overloading the server.

When you go to advanced search, there is a google search bar in the top center of that page, use that to search. It'll pull up DTR threads.

Let me know if you're not picking up what I'm putting down.
