search

Why is the search limited to 4 characters or more? For instance I've tried to do a search for oil threads ( 3 letters) and couldn't get any result. I also tried to search for info on the 57 block and couldn't find anything? Is there a purpose for this?

This is necessary to prevent huge server loads from queries that scan the entire database.
Full database scans require large amounts of CPU and I/O and cause slow page loads for everyone.
There is a new method for searching by using the Google search at the bottom of the pages.
Give it a try. It has no string limit (That Im aware of).

I also tried to search for info on the 57 block and couldn't find anything? Is there a purpose for this?
Did you mean the "53" block issues? Im not familiar with any blocks with the "57" number?

Rich.

Hint:
Try a seach for oil*

The * will act as a wild card.

Here's one.
I was searchign for this string:
bully dog pump kit

I got this from the search engine:

The search term you specified (dog) is under the minimum word length (4) and therefore will not be found. Please make this term longer.
If this term contains a wildcard, please make this term more specific.

I tried twice and it still gave me the same error.

I tried
bullydog fuel pump kit

and it gave the same error, but hollered abut the word "kit" that time.

Admins, please look into this problem.

Thanks,
Chris

If your using the button to do your search, it will not allow three letter words (or less).

Im not sure there is a limit on the Google Search. Give that a try, if you have not already.

Rich.

There is no problem. The minimum character length is 4. The google search has no minimum character length. The search index was way too big. Until the search feature can be optimized or we get a new server, it has to stay that way for now.

Why can't the search results be viewed as threads anymore and just as posts?

Ive tried searches using 5 or more words and I get the same system response as indicated by Stamey. Other than using the Google search button (which gets hits from ALL sites with the search phrase) is there another way to search DTR for specific info? I was trying to find any updates on a thread about custom air intakes.

Thanks,

Steve

PS This isn't a gripe - I think you guy are doing a great job of running this site. I just find this one thing somewhat annoying.

Are you making sure the "DTR site" option is clicked?

If you click the "WWW" option, it will search the entire internet, but the DTR option should just search here.
Unless, maybe Google is onto us and compensating.

Phox,

Sorry, about that. You're right, it does only bring back DTR links, and lots of them. Thanks for the feedback.

I appreciate the offer but we passed T1 a long time ago. We average about 4mbps and peak at over 8-10 at night. We're running off of 3 OC3's right now so bandwidth isn't an issue. Just server power, but not for much longer
