Photobucket is holding me ransom.

It looks like Photobucket is now going to hold me (us ) ransom to host all of the images that I have been posting here on DTR since I have joined back in 2004,

After checking the sticky I find all of the images that I have posted through the years have been disabled.

Last week I received this email.

WE NOTICED THAT YOU HAVE BEEN USING
PHOTOBUCKET FOR 3RD PARTY HOSTING*

TO RESTORE YOUR 3RD PARTY HOSTED IMAGES,
PLEASE UPGRADE TO A PLUS 500 PLAN.

There is no way I am going to pay $399/ year ransom so how do we fix this?

I can probably have all of my images and videos re-hosted but then all of the IMG tags would need to be changed.

Do we have any software that can re-direct the broken links to the new host?

Jim,

Pretty crappy way for photobucket to act....but I understand the photos can still be found and saved locally from Photobucket by the original uploader or anyone can use tools like the Internet Archive below to find a cached copy of the thread and save the images to rebuild any broken threads:
https://archive.org/web/

This is why we have been urging everyone for years to use the free gallery we provide here or post all photos as attachments.

Lary,
The reason that I did not use the free gallery at the time was when I needed to upload a lot of images into my post I always had to wait for them to be approved and that would have delayed me completing the upload.

At the time Photobucket seemed to work fine for what I needed, as I became an administrator I am sure I could have side stepped this but by them I already had over 1000 images hosted by Photobucket, now I have around 2000 images and videos.

Years ago Faith and I had a conversation about uploading my images onto the DTR servers for safekeeping for the very reason in case something went wrong and lost the images to all of my articles in the sticky.

I think for almost all of the articles in the sticky I have the text and the IMG coding saved on my computer.

About how many images or Gb of storage can we have in our gallery?

Jim

Can you have your images private?
Will they link to DTR without any problems?

FWIW
I was not impressed, I logged onto imgur.com

And the first thing I was greeted with was flowing "F" words, vulgarity and suggestive images.

Not the things I would want my wife or daughter to see if they ever opened the site.

Unless this was the wrong Imgur :)

Incredible fail by photobucket. I had around 1500 images on there. No telling if I'll ever be able to fix all of the broken links from years of forum posts. I downloaded all of them to make sure they were backed up on my computer, and deleted my account.

I went to imgur, great so far. Much easier to use than PB, and no daggone ads slowing the site down and messing up your browser.

I didnt get any vulgar stuff logging on to imgur, not sure there.

I'm thinking this is exactly what photobucket wants.
Clear out and delete....

I'm thinking to poke them right back in the eye, create multiple accounts and upload as many gigabyte as possible of their stupid little ransom demand....

Too bad there wasn't an automated script for that.....

What are some other free reliable options besides imgur.com?

When we load images into the DTR gallery, is there a image or Gb limit?

Can I do bulk uploading? it has been years since I have even used it, I am going to see if I still remember how.

Yes you can make them private as I do all my photos. What you are seeing when you log on or go to the home page are images that other people have uploaded. Imgur is completely different than photobucket. There is also flickr
