No The Classifieds Don't SUCK!!!!

Since you are asking for suggestions, how about some way to sort by area? My first choice would be a subsection of the regional chapters. That way you can see what the local guys near you are selling.
I don't bother with the classifieds on here as I'm in Alberta Canada and not really interested in an item in Texas.

That would be nice however it all lies on how lazy the seller is when placing the ad. As you can see many of them don't even bother to say what locale they are in. Like you I want to know if an item is close enough to me to even bother looking at it

So in a nutshell we all agree that the classifieds are only as good as the information on what the seller has and where the sell is from. To me the only way to make sure that the 5 W's are answered is to have someone proof the ad before it is upload. I know I would not want to be proofing those every time someone want to post what thay have because then you would have the same thing that they are doing in the classifieds never get back with the information you need before there ad got ran. So it pretty much comes down to WHO wants to deal with the clutter and is it simpler just to try and get the answer what the classifieds the way we lready are.
Just my two cents. But to me some one is going to have to preview the ads if we want them cleaned up. Or we all just deal with the way it is...

You hit the nail on the head, even if we had a "Classifieds Moderator" proof reading each ad and then asking the seller for the info that is missing before allowing the ad to go up, a most likely scenario is half the requests by the Moderator would go unanswered or delayed by days/weeks.
I wish the software was set up so they HAD to answer certain questions IE: Locale, Zip Code etc....... but even then you have some guys that are so paranoid they would post a false zip code
Sadly the Classifieds come under the heading of self moderating, which means we rely on you the member to help us out by posting your ads in a manner that helps EVERYONE and yourself in the process.
I have thought about a sticky with RULES for posting Classified ads in the hopes that would help but just go look at the Help forum to see how many would actually read it.
The Help forum is for Immediate help posting if you are broke down, out of town and need help getting back on the road kind of emergency's. We get people posting everyday goofy questions in there directly below the post that tells them not to I move stuff out of that forum every single day.
Bottom line, nobody pays attention or they feel that the rules are for everyone else except them. We make these forum rules in an attempt to make it easier for everyone but they only work if a person actually reads them

Another thing to keep in mind about the classifieds. When you click on contact seller, you're sending a pm on this site to said seller. Many many many times I've seen in the past, the seller replying to the email they get notifying them of the pm instead of responding to the pm itself. So when that happens, the customer never knows they've got a response from the seller because the seller DID NOT READ the email that specifically states "DO NO REPLY TO THIS EMAIL, THE RECIPIENT WILL NOT GET IT".
So I hate to say it, but a lot of guys never make contact with each other because they cannot follow simple instructions.

Following simple directions. I think the worst time I have ever had with that is while doing hand grenade throw.. Simple directions...
1. Thumb click..Push it off...
2. Twist pull..... (safety pin)
3. Throw... (grenade) easy right....
Private First Class Thumb click.... No problem.... Twist pull... No problem either live grenade... Throw...(grenade not safety pin)...
So ends up pulling safety pin, and throwing it. While also dropping the now exploding grenade at our feet.
So then gladly I understood my directions...
1. grab Marine...
2. throw him out of pit...
3. Three jump and follow him out of pit...
Moral of the story SOMEONE ALWAYS screws it up even when you think they CANT....

As I have found time and time again when dealing with both customers and 'associates' in my line of work:
It's useless to attempt to make something "Idiot-Proof"
Someone will just build a better Idiot.

One thing that would help get sellers to respond is to make it so they automatically get a notice via PM & E-Mail if someone responds to their ad. Right now you have to click for that option but even I, Yes the one and only Dodgezilla, often forget to do that. If memory serves, once the ad is placed you cannot change this option...

I know its against DTR rules......but I will always believe that ads such as EBAY and a few others or "links" to other adds is a great help.
I will give you an example.....I am in need of a speedometer gear reducer for my 93 W250. There are a lot of members that do alot of searching as well as I do. If I know someone is looking for something, I could post it and let anyone/everyone know what it is I found and where I found it at. Even if it were under my signature.
It has already happened to another member that I happened to stumble across in an add for a shifter top for a Getrag. I had to send him a pm to give him the link so he could get his truck back on the road. He was appreciative about me looking out for him. Thats what were here for...right?
I do believe that you all are to scared or afraid of losing advertising (or at least thats what the excuse is) to let people use links to other items for sale on the net.
It wouldnt be such an issue......but I think you too have to realize that some of these parts we need for the trucks we love........are getting few and far between, especially when the dealer and aftermaket parts are no longer being made.
Please dont ban me either for making my stance on this known publically. I just think there should be something here to help our own membership out.

For every one person like yourself that just wants to help his fellow member out, there are 500 people just trying to find a way to exploit the hard work we do here and make a buck off of us while cluttering up our forum and making it look like a flea market......No thanks, we will pass on that but thanks for your suggestion anyway
