On the main page of the site I have often looked at the "online users" box that tells how many people are using the site at a given time, and for years it was always pretty consistent at 1200-1800 people most times I looked. Now, over the last few days it has jumped up to upwards of 10,000 users every time I have looked at it. Has it actually made a big jump suddenly, or is the number just being calculated differently? The site hasn't seemed to have slowed down any (as far as server load seems to go), I am just curious about the huge increase.

A couple years back we would see these huge numbers like this so we looked into it....Most of them were "spider programs" trying to log on and smother us with spam.....

We changed things so they couldn't do that and our numbers dropped back to the normal you remember seeing. I think the new owners here have yet to close the loopholes as we did to keep those nosy programs at bay on the new equipment and software.
