Plaudersmiles.de

Guys. I ask that those of you who are using smilies from plaudersmiles.de stop using them on this site. Whenever they have a problem with their site, it slows us down tremendously and increases page loads by up to 10 times. Even when their site is working properly, it can cause problems with slow page loads by doubling and tripling the time it take for someone to view a page.

Your help with this would be appreciated.

I'm not going to make you stop using them, but it DOES slow the site down for certain users. Especially dialup users.

I have been thinking about getting a large directory of smilies here so you guys might be able to use that instead. We'll see how it goes.

Re:Plaudersmiles.de

I've only seen problems from plaudersmiles.de so far. The other issues I've seen is when some folks try and link to a pic on their personal website, then we nail the hosting company for bandwidth, then they lock us out. hehehe. I've seen that happen many times. Basically what happens is the pic goes away and you only get a red x. They know the difference between someone trying to surf the site, and someone who has a link to the pic. They can block the links, but will let you see the pic when you enter the url directly.

Jack

Glad to see you found this and changed it. I use dialup and the pages are loading MUCH faster today. It is almost instant page loading. I assume that you deleted all the smilies from that site.

Thanks a bunch, you are doing a great job.

Dan

Re:Plaudersmiles.de

Jack: Are those smilies on Plauder free to download (not copyrighted or anything)? If so, it'd be easy to download the ones we use the most and store them on a DTR server and pull them from there...they're nothing more than animated gifs...

Re:Plaudersmiles.de

Java, they are free. That's a pretty good idea. I could put them in a directory somewhere and let people link to them on the site. I don't think it would be a huge issue.
