Checking your voltage at the starter isn't a bad...

Supertech from Walmart will be the cheapest from what I have seen.. have you thought about trying Amsoil Synthetic ATF? Its good stuff, can go 3x the normal change interval unless its overheated.

I'd say its the heater core too.. mine only did it for about a week or 2 after I replaced it. Like stated above, run it and leave the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens. It takes a while..
