xzt+ and towing

I used my truck mostly for towing - 3k camper and or 7k boat. From where I live, up is a common direction. It seems the xzt+ gets some good reviews but I've got a couple of questions:

Can I tow in either setting?
Will egt's become uncontrollable in power mode(fuel and timing)?
Does the box affect boost?
Anything else I should consider?

I'm not looking for serious power (shh, my wife is watching) but think a set of upgraded sticks may be in my future.

Am I moving in the right direction?

How does the xzt compare to the ts mvp?

I live in Seattle - right next door to the smoke nazi's so need to keep it clean.

One more question:

What does a boost fooler do for me - besides add more boost. Is this a good thing or do I need to be concerned about running this on a stock engine?

Thanks guys,
Claybob

I dont have much experience with XZT, but its the one im going to get my my wifes duramax, so she can pull her horse trailer better. ONe good things is the ability to switch it on or off with the flip of a toggle.
Ill be watching this thread.

the xzt+ does it's own boost fooling - no additional fooler's needed.

the xzt+ affects boost by adding more fuel. more fuel = more boost.

i have heard of guys towing heavy with it without a problem with the EGT's

when i tow i run it in timing only mode, but i switch to fuel and timing when needed - such as passing.

i never started puffing smoke until i added the rv275 injectors. ran very clean with stock injectors.

i don't know how it compares to the ts mvp

i know i am happy with my xzt+ so far running a 2000 tune. i can't wait to run a 3000 or beta1 tune - but i'm gonna upgrade the LP first.

I had the XZT+, a boost elbow, and RV275s in my rig a while back. That setup was a towing SOB that never broke 1250 EGTS ( I live in the flatlands, but had to be driving really stupid to see those temps,) It was a really nice setup, and made about 280 at the rear wheels. I always towed with the box on the timing+fuel setting.

Now I tow with TS MVP and 150s....... Of couse there is a big difference in power, but EGTs are still controllable. (Once again.... Flatland Louisiana)

I can't really give a fair comparison of XZT+ vs. MVP, since my setup is alot different... I was perfectly satisfied with the way I had the XZT+ setup. I am also satisfied with my setup now.

Doj Dewd,
thanks for the info. When you say puffing smoke...is that with the xzt on hp and the rv275's? If you turn off the box is smoke still an issue? I need to be careful around Seattle but it's also the frist place I leave. How much boost do you see - I need to select the appropraite boost guage.

jmd025,
Do you remember how much boost you saw with the XZT and the boost elbow? Do you recall if you were smokey with the 275's and if so, how bad?

Did either of you see a milage increase with the XZT and 275's?

Thanks guys.

I saw something like 28-30 psi from that combo with the boost elbow completely closed off. I wouldn't call it smokey....but it would lay out a good thick "puff" when you went full throttle.

My mileage stayed the same........but I was driving the truck harder too.

Boost elbow completely closed off as in no wastgate? Sorry for the stupid questions.

I have what your looking at and have been towing a 5th wheel and a boat as my sig says. I can get it to smoke if I want it to and I can also get stupid and get over 1200 pe-turbo.
The best thing is I can go East from Denver to a lake about 3.5 hours and never shift from OD in the power mode and still get the same MPG as with no boost.

Doj Dewd 07-13-2009 06:20 PM

when the box is off or in timing only, i have to step into it pretty quick and hard to get it to smoke. same as in timing & fuel, but it's just a bit thicker.

don't worry about it smoking all the time. it only does it when i want it to.

i have removed the stock wastgate elbow fitting and replaced it with a 1/8 npt plug. my wastegate is disconnected/plugged off. the most boost i see is 28-30.

get a 60 or higher boost gauge. i was gonna get a 30, but was talked into a 60 and am glad i didn't go with a 30!!

I live in Nazi, no smoke Seattle, where I'm required to do a snap test at the dmv (just another way to make 15 bucks). They look for a certain amount of particulates but I'm not sure how much. With the box off, when you stand on it does is just puff and then clean or is it consistent.

Thanks all for the 1/8 npt tip. A bit less than the $25 for an elbow I'm just gonna close.

Doj Dewd 07-13-2009 08:07 PM

just a small puff, it clears as soon as the turbo starts producing boost . . .

I'll agree w/all the above post.
timing only mode=no smoke at all for me
timing+fuel mode= some smoke until the turbo spools up
I would have to say towing the boat (5-6k lbs) in timing+fuel mode it has helped out. Egts @ wot towing are a max of 1100* which was noticably lower after the 5" exhaust install. I think the next upgrade is Mach 1.6s.

Thanks guys for all your input...I'm ordering the XZT+ NOW!

It's also easy enough to unplug when you get tested.
