XZT+ and high-idle
XZT+ and high-idle
Just bought an XZT+... hope to see it by the man in "brown" in a couple days. I've been perusing the downloads available and have a question.
For the "features" list of the 2004 program, this is one of the bullets:
---> High Idle will only engage in the OFF setting once engine has reached 140 deg Coolant Temperature
So what is this saying... once the truck has already started warming up and the coolant temp reaches 140, THEN high-idle kicks in??? Isn't that a waste if the truck has already warmed up to 140+ degrees? I don't think I want high idle if it's already at 140 (or warmer). I want it to kick in almost immediately if the temp is cold and then stop after 140 degrees, wouldn't I?
Please help explain this.
The really confusing part is another bullet for the SAME 2004 program:
---> High Idle will engage regardless of temperature
So which is it? Will it engage at 140* or at any temperature? Or do they mean "High Idle will engage regardless of OUTSIDE AIR temperature".
Am I the only one a bit confused here?

What happens is this. Regardless of switch position, when under 140* temp, the high idle will kick-in automaticly after a few minutes of idleing. Once the 140* temp is met it will will NOT automaticly go into high idle. But at that point, if you put the switch into the "off" position, the engine will go into high idle mode immediately regardless of temperatures.
So basicly we're talking about two different "forms" of "high idle" here. The first is to help warm your engine. The second is for extended idle periods for charging you battery, someone elses battery, and / or whatever. This really comes in handy in work truck applications. I.E. trucks running onboard air compressors, on board welders, winches and so on.

OK, so it DOES come on when idling for a programmed amount of time (say 1 minute) and while BELOW 140* in ANY switch position. This will help with warm up times on a cold Colorado day. Did I correctly paraphrase you?
I also understand the second purpose about high idling and if that only occurs while the box is off, then that can be useful too.
Thanks for the explanation.

This is also correct. Well, almost. The box really isn't off if you've loaded up a "high idle" enabled tune. Yes you use the off position, but that enables the high idle. So basicly, it's not off. The XZT+ can only be tuned off by using the switch if you have one of the non high idle tunes loaded.
I've been using the 2004 tune, and I just wanted to add, that after the truck is warmed up, above 140, switching to the OFF position does not immediately start the high idle. There is still a 2 min wait period.
Love the 2004 tune. You will enjoy it.

That's good to know Josh, thanks! I'm looking forward to getting it.
Do you think I should even bother starting with the stock 1000 tune it comes with or just download a new tune and load it up even before installing the box?

even the tune that comes loaded on it will perform well, the other tunes are just tweeked a little here and there I guess and get more aggressive. The way I understand it, they all give the same gains, its just how quick they get to that point that is changed ( as in lots of smoke, or practically no smoke).
Im running the Comp tune right now, doesn't feel stronger than the 2004 i had, but is really really smokey. I will probably go back to 2004.

Got a couple of questions about this:
1. will the 2004 tune for the XZT+ destroy a stock auto?
2. with the switch off to use the high idle for charging, will the power adding still be active?
I have been looking for something to put on my truck for high idle, to help the charging system, for emergency lights.

I decided to download the 2004 tune myself since I just got the box today from the man in brown. I wired up the truck, but had a bit of a problem getting the new box to work with the software... eventually got that figured out. I then installed the 2004 tune and went for a ride.
After figuring out which switch position was "off" vs "aggressive", I am most impressed by the "aggressive" setting.
I hardly noticed a difference on the "timing only" middle setting... is that common?
I also noticed the high-idle setting. That is pretty sweet.
Since I only had about 15 minutes to play with the power, I'm looking forward to going out for a real drive the next time I need to. But so far, I'm very impressed!!

I installed mine yesterday as well. Unfortunately, I haven't had any time to download any new tunes; maybe this afternoon. So far with just the factory tune, I am pretty impressed. The truck seems to drive better; more lively and with far better throttle response. Can't wait to load the 2000 or 3000 tunes!
Despite 30 minutes of searching this forum, my question is....... which side of the switch is the power tune on and which is the mileage tune on? I believe the OFF position is in the middle.
I know this question has already been answered here, I just can't seem to find the thread.

True but it also depends on which way you have the switch installed. Mine is just the opposite. One should be able to easily tell which is the "full throttle" mode when switched properly. No, trans problems as it's only adding 65hp. Overall, an excellent box & cust service support. Way to go Quad.
Ok, so another question about the switch. Is the switch to select the level or off, on the box or is it separate to mount in the cab?
Edit: question answered by installation instructions.
XZT+ is definatly on my to do list now.
All I need is a job so I can afford to buy it and keep my truck.

OK. so I am really curious about this... should I feel much in the center switch position (timing only)? Should I notice lower EGTs in some situations (what would those be)?
I realize it should help in mileage, but that's not noticeable until I take a few trips / tank fulls.
