Why does Dodge build junk?
Why does Dodge build junk?
An engine that will last a minimum of 500,000 miles if properly taken care of, and it has junk all around it. At 62,000 I smoked the tranny. It seems to eat brakes like candy. And now, at 84,000 it appears that the flywheel is cracked. Dealer says no go on that being covered under the Cummins warranty. Does anyone know of any upgrades?, better flywheel, stronger complete set-up (flywheel / torque converter), etc.
P.S. No mods (except 4" exhaust & BHAF) - therefore the tranny, and flywheel can't be the fault of the such.

That way you will turn around and by a new one every few years. If the truck lasted as long as the engine, they would go out of business. Don't worry if you have a "53 block", you don't have to worry about it cracking. Cummins and Dodge has said there is no issue with these blocks.
I've got 77k on mine and I've replaced the tranny governors, the AC compressor, 4 ball joints, and a couple of fuel pumps but nothing major. The flywheel should be covered under the cummins warranty since it's part of the drive train. I love my truck and I don't care how cruddy the rest of it is. That's why they make aftermarket parts for it.
74,000 miles before the electronics in the valve body took the big dirt nap.
Upon teardown, the internals (bands, clutches, gears) looked pretty darned good.
One lift pump @ 37,000 miles(I think the fuel additive every tankfull may have helped). ,
One brake light bulb, and normal filters, fluids, brake pads etc.
Not too shabby.

I have 210K on mine, turning 37" tires and at least 300 HP since 80K. Other than OIF's (Owner Induced Failures), I replaced the trans at 180K (trans worked fine, but the TC lockup clutch was fried, it was a great excuse to buy a BOMBed trans) and a lift pump.
Also did tie rod ends/balljoints/u-joints, a track bar, and steering box. Shot out front end parts are almost a given when running 5" of lift and 37's.
Aside from the trans, I replaced everything else between 190-205K because it was plain wore out. Nothing failed, I chose to replace these parts before I got stranded somewhere.

Well service about every 45,000 miles. I have a guy look at the TP every once in a while. That’s about it. The tranny is starting to get a little hard on the shifts from first to second. Yes I tow, about every 2 weeks I load a 3500LB pallet of horse bedding pellets in the back and take it back to the ranch. I tow every so often, maybe once every 2 months. Its anything from a cement mixer to a horse trailer. My valve covers are starting to leak, but very little. Turbo still seems fine. I did have the tranny line drop down on the motor cross member and rub a fat hole in it, so I cut it and put some hose on it. I have a new line waiting to go in. my fuel sending unit went out too, and i have a new one im fixing before I put it in. Other than that, it’s been fine. I also had a new oil pan put in, because some kid at oil changers put the cap back on too much.
I think the trick is where I live I can coast my truck out in the morning when its still cold and the tranny converter is drained out. I live way back in a valley and when I wake up in the morning I start the truck let it warm up for about 2 min, then go down the driveway, I coast about 3 miles at idle in drive out to the main high way, then go on from there.
I must have gotten a truck built on Wednesday
