Question Where Do You Start

I am new to the diesel performance world. I have a 95 12v and am wondering what is a good set up to get around 300hp and 600ft of torque. I am lost in the 12v with all of the different plates ect. I want a reliable setup or is that a reliable level and still want to retain good fuel milage. Getting about 21mpg interstate driving. Where do I start. I know that I will need gauges ect. Do you start with injectors, turbo, plates, airfilter, exhaust ect.

start with the gauges , if you are going to change the truck you are responsable for damage , so to avoid that you need to know whats happening. next is to build a trans[ and or clutch] to take the extra HP becouse the trans is a little weak for stock .

Is your stick or auto?

For the 300 mark on mine I did a #10 plate, timing to 16.5, 3k GSK, intake and exhaust. Dyno'd around 300 - 320 with that setup. Still gets good milage depending on the right foot.

here is a good intro as to what some of this stuff means..

Gauges, plates, intakes and timing are all part of it. Your numbers are super easy to reach, I too started off wanting just 300 rwhp and 750 TQ, needless to say once you start BOMBing, that might all change.. enjoy reading these posts, scroll down and you will see a long one that i wrote to help out another member, it hopefully will serve as a good refrence for you..

Thank you for your help I know there is lots of potential for a 12v. My truck is a automatic. I wanted a 5sp I have looked for the last 7 months and I couldn't find a manual. Everyone I found was a late model 24v and they wanted an arm and a leg. I got a good deal on this truck. I know the transmission is the weakpoint. What is a good aftermaket trans that will reliabley hold say 3-400hp. Is it worth the extra money to get something like an ats or have the stock rebuilt get a good torque convertier and diff valve body ect. Right now truck is getting me back and forth to school. Might haul 24' stock trailor 8k lbs of cattle once in a blue moon for my dad.

Just with with a beefy torque converter and a valve body. I hear DTT, Gorend, or Suncoast are the way to go. Enjoy your auto, better launches!!!!!!!!!!
